'You got your $7 back, so the world is right now,' Tansey said, sarcastically.

Being rude can have consequences, and sometimes it can even cost you your entire business. That’s exactly what happened with the staff of a car dealership who insisted a pizza delivery driver return the $7 change he was handed as part of the order, reported CNN. What started as a simple dispute over $7 quickly escalated into a heated confrontation in January 2015, which was caught on camera and sparked an outpouring of support for the driver from strangers across the country.

It all began when Palace Pizza delivery guy Jarrid Tansey delivered $42 worth of pizzas and drinks to a Massachusetts business in Westport named F&R Auto Sales. After his delivery, he was paid $50 in two $20s and two $5s. However, as he was returning, an employee named Willoughby from the car dealership called the driver, asking him to return the change worth $7 and a few coins. The video, which was posted on LiveLeak, begins with Tansey returning to the dealership with the money. However, upon handing the change to the man in a blue shirt seated behind the desk, Tansey can be seen expressing his distress over being asked to return the change that was given to him anyway.

Well, this did not sit right with the employees at the dealership, who made a big mistake: they resorted to bullying the poor guy. Although Tansey can be seen saying he wasn't complaining, and was simply expressing his concern over having to drive back for a small change, the man at the desk gets irked and says, "The manager apologized once for you, do you want him to apologize again for you?", to which Tansey replies "You got your $7 back, so the world is right now." However, one female employee decides to bully the delivery guy further by yelling a crude comment, "Out the door before I put my foot in your a**". This makes the entire staff break into laughter, as another man says in an entitled tone, "I want him dead." Tansey can be seen quietly leaving the office, not wishing to escalate the matter further. But the internet folks did not hold back.

The video was recorded through a security camera and was uploaded by someone on LiveLeak, which quickly went viral. People were shocked at the way the poor pizza delivery guy was treated, but it was Amanda Rogers, a former waitress, who was moved by the video. She decided to track down Tansey's contact and started a fundraiser for him called, 'Get Jarrid his rip money!' Funnily enough, there began an outpouring of donations ($7 each) by people from across the country. Not only did they donate, but the internet was touched by Tansey's kind attitude despite being humiliated. The feisty internet users began to flood negative reviews on the car dealer's website, prompting the owner of the company to intervene. Although the company claims that it was not an employee who leaked the video, they revealed that the female employee's job was immediately terminated for her rude behaviour. As for Jarrid Tansey, he received an apology from the dealership’s manager, and thanks to kind strangers online, those $7 multiplied manifold, offering him more than $11,000!

A study conducted by Christine L. Porath and Christine M. Pearson in 2013 explores how rudeness in the workplace carries heavy hidden costs. Based on more than 14 years of research and data from over 14,000 people in the U.S. and Canada, the authors highlighted that incivility lowers morale, harms customer relationships, and wastes valuable management time. The dealership incident with Jarrid Tansey is a perfect example of this principle. What began as a dispute over $7 escalated into employees being fired, the business’s reputation getting tarnished, and customers publicly expressing outrage.
