10 minutes later, the manager approached their table with a free cheesecake

A customer (u/secretaryok4706) who went to a restaurant with their girlfriend's family wrote a brutal Google review because of outright disastrous service. Ten minutes later, the situation took an unexpected turn when, despite the bad review, the manager approached the author with a free dessert. The author shared their experience on Reddit on August 25, 2026, and the post has since received over 5,000 upvotes.
TIFU by leaving a bad restaurant review while I was still sitting in the restaurant

This was the last restaurant where the author expected a distasteful experience, because several acquaintances had recommended it to them in the first place. The dinner was special for the author because it was their opportunity to bond with their girlfriend’s parents. However, the evening turned distasteful because of the poor restaurant service. "Service was a disaster. Wrong drinks, food took forever, my girlfriend’s dad got his steak basically cold," the author recalled. Frustrated, they opened their phone and typed a 2-star review with a detailed explanation about everything that went wrong.

About 10 minutes later, the manager walked up to their table and announced the customer's full name. Surprisingly, he was extremely polite. After an apology, he comped two of their meals and offered a free cheesecake dessert. Moreover, the manager questioned the customer about the negative review and asked why they didn’t communicate the problem before posting it. The entire conversation was happening in front of the author's girlfriend’s parents. "Her dad thought it was hilarious. Her mom definitely did not," the person described. Over the next 20 minutes, while the family relished the free dessert, the person was rattled by the sudden twist. They took down the review later.
Neither the manager nor the customer was at fault here. While the manager was unaware of what was happening outside his office, the customer was blamelessly disgruntled by the poor service. However, as a study published in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications concluded, managerial response plays an important role in determining whether the customer leaves feeling satisfied or dissatisfied. The study also found that managerial apologies can dramatically increase customer satisfaction, with personalized responses increasing the probability of a 10/10 rating by about 19.1%.

Meanwhile, Reddit readers reassured the customer that although the manager’s retaliation worked out, there was nothing wrong in leaving an honest review. For example, u/NeoSpiker said, “Not a f*** up. You gave an honest opinion and shouldn't be shamed for it.” u/MarkGulfCOast offered another perspective: “It's literally their job to ensure this doesn't happen in the first place. Things fall through the cracks, for sure, but that's on them.” u/Electronic__Olive, however, had a different experience. They wrote, "I did this once at a pizza place, and I heard them mockingly reading my review out loud in the kitchen."
