The customer used the Lord's name to justify freeloading.

Skipping out on a bill is bad enough, but some customers find extremely creative ways to justify it. A general manager at a restaurant who goes by u/thedivinegemini on Reddit shared two photos on July 3, recalling a customer who just walked out on an almost $17 bill, claiming that Jesus had already covered it. Shared on July 3, 2026, the post has received 61,000 upvotes and 2,700 comments online.
The first photo was a list of things the customer mentioned that Jesus had apparently paid for. It included 'sin,' 'immorality,' 'shame & regret,' 'anger & hate,' 'pride & envy,' and others. The total due was $0.00, and the customer wrote that the full amount was paid "in full on the cross." Frustrated, the restaurant staff added, "I guess the whole 'Thou shalt not steal' thing doesn’t matter if you’ve been pre-forgiven. Pretty convenient." Moreover, she had shared another photo from the Pulse app, indicating that the customer had ordered a $5 mocktail called the 'Pineapple Express' and hummus worth $11.49. However, instead of paying the $16.49 bill, they left a note that said, "Jesus paid the bill."
While many may find the incident shocking, such happenings aren't unusual. In fact, TakePayments surveyed 1,500 British citizens and found that nearly 8% left a restaurant without paying for a meal. It also found that men (9%) are more likely to dine and dash compared to women (7%). The survey also discovered that people aged 35-44 were the most common group to leave without paying for their meal
Meanwhile, Amanda Brighton, the director at Joe's Bar and Grill in Oxford, narrated a similar incident on the BBC in which a large group tried to walk out without paying the bill. "We had a group of people come in; they ordered a lot of food at once, and a lot of expensive drinks, and their bill was £230. They usually place the foreign object in the food at the end. They try to leave completely without paying anything," she explained.

Such instances leave a lasting impact on restaurant staff. Emphasizing it, Neil Kimber, who once ran a restaurant in Selsey, said, "We had a lot of issues with staff being totally physically sick and upset following these incidents. We had a very large dine and dash of over £400, and the particular member of staff was questioning himself why he let that money go. It's not just the money but the effect it had on him."

Meanwhile, reacting to the unreal incident, u/ant1mat3r commented, "Serving tables made me hate the church crowd. To this day I can't go out to eat on a Sunday between 10 am and 1 pm for fear that I'd run into those loathsome creatures." Similarly, u/not_cleaver said, "Yes, Jesus paid it all, but those customers didn’t do anything to pay for Christ’s sacrifice. It’s close to blasphemy to take credit for what he did. Also, they suck for being more akin to the Pharisees that Jesus condemned than the tax collectors that Jesus ate with. He also ordered his disciples to take no payment when they minister to others, so taking a free meal is payment, which isn’t what he wanted."
