A couple who met on a blind date show 35 years ago shares the secrets to their lasting bond, sparking online admiration and curiosity.
People have mixed opinions about blind dating. Some find it a waste of time, while others are fascinated by the suspense of not knowing their date before meeting them in person. The social arrangement between two strangers has long been a matter of public discussion, so much so that even TV broadcasters made shows out of the concept. A 35-year-strong couple's story recently gained traction on social media after they revealed they met on one such show back in the day. Sue and Alex, from the larger West Midlands region of England, were the latest to feature on an Instagram-born lovers' celebration account, Meet Cutes LDN (@meetcutesldn).
As the video began, the interviewer stopped an English couple walking down a street in London. When asked about their story, Alex, without wasting any time, recalled how he met his wife on television. The intriguing insight into the pedestrian's life prompted the interviewer to ask a follow-up question. "What happened on television?" the host asked. Alex, with his eloquent English accent, responded by saying, 'Uh, we met on a TV game show. It was called 'Blind Date.'"
When the interviewer seemed a little dismissive of the facts, the Englishman asked him to look for them on the show's YouTube archives, where their wedding video has 17.5 million views. But how did Alex and Sue end up getting together on the show? To this, Alex explained, "I mean, let's face it, I could have picked from number one and number three. This (pointing at Sue) was number two." When Alex was asked about his favorite aspect of the whole blind dating experience, he summed it up, saying, "The fact that actually she's as beautiful today as she was when I first met her."
Furthermore, Sue was also asked about the same in the one-and-a-half-minute video. She described her husband as someone who is so kind and mostly likes to make her laugh constantly. Upon seeing the couple's happy union, even after 35 long years, the host asked, "What advice would you give to a couple that just met on a blind date?" Sue shared her wisdom, "Go into it with an open heart and just go in to make the best of it," the Westlands-born woman said, advocating positivity and kindness towards one's partner. "The first thing we agreed on during our blind date, broadcast across the UK, was to remain lifelong friends," said Alex, echoing his wife's sentiments.
“I think the first thing we said was that, since we’re on a blind date and this will be a spectacular experience in front of the entire UK public and nation,” the husband recalled. No matter what happened between them, according to Alex, they stuck together through thick and thin, with their friendship continuing throughout the broadcast and beyond. Their story struck a chord with many on the internet, with the video receiving over 1.5 million views and thousands of comments. “Oh my goodness, I remember this episode and the participants, especially the man, as his eyes were absolutely gorgeous,” wrote @carolblare1212. “They are one of my favorite couples, truly inspiring,” @concrete_jungle_gyal added. “There needs to be a blind date revisited, we need to meet these couples and know how to make these relationships work,” shared @harriotte_.
