'After hearing his story, it didn’t take much convincing for us to want to check it out.'
At a gas station, most people expect to get their car tank refilled and move on; however, a newly engaged couple, Kara Lewis Webb (@karaxlewis) and West Webb, bumped into a hairless cat perched on a stranger’s shoulders. The cat and the stranger ended up rewriting their dream wedding plans. Standing near the pumps, the cat owner turned out to be the owner of a wedding venue. Though they had been looking for a venue in California, a quick tour and a serendipitous meeting with the staff convinced them to shift their entire wedding plans overnight. 25-year-old Kara shared the story in a September 22, 2026, reel, which has since tallied 8.5 million views. PEOPLE revisited the unusual chain of events in an October 23, 2026 interview, after Kara’s Instagram video drew millions of views.
They were on their way back from Gatlinburg, where West had proposed to Kara, when they bumped into a Sphynx hairless cat slung over the shoulders of a man. Since Kara had never seen a hairless cat before, they requested him to let them film it. “We thought it was so random, and naturally, we were intrigued,” Kara shared with PEOPLE. “Excuse me, sir, I have never seen a hairless cat in person before, and I wanted to see if I could pet it?” they asked the man. The couple introduced themselves as social media storyteller influencers, while the man introduced himself as Buck Yates and his cat as Romeo.

Lucky that they were, Yates turned out to be the owner of a wedding venue, Ramble Creek, in Athens, Tennessee. The couple lives in California, and Tennessee wasn’t actually on their radar. But after hearing venue descriptions from Yates, they were immediately hooked. They followed him blindly to check out the venue. “Buck began sharing his background in construction and contracting, along with how proud he was of the venue he had built,” Kara described. “You could tell how much it meant to him just by the way he spoke about it. After hearing his story, it didn’t take much convincing for us to want to check it out.” Yates had promised them it would be “worth the detour,” and it proved so, too.

The couple weren’t sure that trusting the stranger was a good idea; neither did they have any expectations. But when their intuition guided them towards him, they followed. They drove down the hill to the property and entered what looked like a beautiful white rustic barn, overlooking a large vineyard and green grass fields. Staff members immediately welcomed them, and the chef even whipped up a platter of mac and cheese. Kara and West were offered an on-site tour and were even invited to stay the night at the manor. They didn’t expect that a random gas station encounter would bless them with a friendship—the friendship with Yates and his staff.
By this time, they had already selected Ramble Creek as their wedding venue. “In that very moment, we felt an overwhelming sense of peace and clarity. We knew that our prayer had been answered and that our hunt for wedding venues was over,” Kara shared. On Sunday, October 11, the couple had a “fairytale wedding” where the brisket mac-and-cheese they had tasted was served as the hors d’oeuvres. Romeo was the ring-bearer. At the end of the wedding day, they celebrated in the parking lot of the same gas station — having snacks and a quick dance before heading to their honeymoon destination.
Unexpected encounters can sometimes become meaningful because people notice an opportunity and act on it. In a study of 289 professionals, academics and graduate students (by Information Processing & Management academic journal), availiable online on March 16, 2015, researchers examined the conditions that make serendipitous experiences more likely. They found that environments offering unexpected triggers and opportunities to make new connections were more conducive to serendipity. Kara and West’s gas-station encounter fits that idea unusually well: an ordinary stop introduced them to a stranger, a cat and eventually the place where they would get married.

Viewers were just as intrigued by the venue’s tour and the poignant interaction. Many of them, who were aware of the venue, agreed that it’s a dream wedding place. @the_intimacyguide commented, “I think God told you where you should be getting married. That was divine interruption happening.” @_abundantphoto_ told Kara, “I have photographed weddings here for years. It’s literally the most magical venue, with the most amazing staff who make every wedding effortless for couples and their families. You won’t find anything else like it!” Yates’ Ramble Creek also left a comment on the reel, saying, “What started with a quick hello to our weird (and crazy lovable cat) turned into a day our team will never forget. And just so you know… we’re already looking at kitty tuxedos in case you decide Romeo needs to be your ring bearer. We’ve got you.”
