Everyone wants their wedding reception to be unique and memorable, but one couple just took it a little too far. Well, right after the ceremony, they made their guests drive to 4 different locations for meals. By the third venue, people were so tired that only half of the guests made it to the real party. Besides the location-hopping, the couple also made their guests pay $50 in valet fees, which further added to their frustration. The reception relay
The wedding ceremony ended around 12 PM, and the guests were given an address for the reception. When they arrived there, they were served a few entrées. However, right after the meal, the bride and groom asked their guests, around 75 to 100, to join them at another restaurant 12 miles away. The guests followed, and when they got to the second restaurant, they were served a Mexican main course. After the main course, the couple again asked them to move to a third location that was 8 miles away in downtown L.A. The author was already getting frustrated but decided to continue with the celebrations. "By now it’s 4 pm; we’ve paid $12 for valet at restaurant 1 and $18 at restaurant 2," they recalled.
Reception burnout
The guests were getting irritated, but the couple wanted them to move to a different location for dessert. Nonetheless, most followed their instructions and drove for around 40 minutes to reach the third venue due to heavy traffic. The author had to pay an extra $20 for valet there too. After the sweet treats, the couple again asked the guests to join them at a different venue, 30 miles away. They did not reveal what was there, but the author refused to drive 60 miles away from their house.
"At this point, I said my congrats and went home. It was already 7 p.m., and we were sweaty from the extreme heat, overworked, and exhausted from all the driving," the author said. The following day, they found out that the last location had an open bar and a dance floor. However, by the end of the night, only half of their guests made it to the last venue.
Wedding or road trip?
People expect a fun time at weddings, so they try to avoid going if it consumes too much of their time, travel, and expense. In fact, a survey by Wedding Wire found that 25% of respondents would turn down a wedding if they had to travel too far or if the ceremony was at an inconvenient location. Well, that was exactly what happened at the couple's wedding. Instead of one venue, they made the guests drive to four different places. Furthermore, driving in L.A. traffic was also stressful.
Emphasizing people's reluctance towards traffic, a survey by Lemon Law Experts revealed that 74% of American respondents would rather do household chores than drive during a heavy traffic hour. Similarly, 43% would sit through a boring meeting, and 31% would even visit the dentist to avoid the traffic. This was another reason the author felt frustrated when the couple announced a fourth location that was 30 miles away.
'What a dump idea'
Meanwhile, people in the comment section pointed out how idiotic the plan was to host a reception over four locations and not provide the guests with proper transportation. For instance, u/DanteRuneclaw commented, "They should have sprung for a party bus. NTA." Similarly, u/DrTeethPhD wrote, "NTA. Oh, it was 'different and memorable' alright. But it will be remembered as a terrible reception organized by clueless people. I would have given up after restaurant 2."
