When a woman who had been running a café in the neighborhood noticed the restaurant's condition, she stepped in to support Mike's legacy.

The world witnessed an inspiring tale of community solidarity when James Michael "Mike" Hedden, owner of "Buddy's Pizza," died unexpectedly at the age of fifty-four. Mike, also the chef, had opened the restaurant almost twenty years ago, but over time, the place became more than just a simple eatery. He took great pride in feeding people. In fact, Buddy's Pizza was way more than just a business for him. For years, Mike worked around the clock, successfully running the Kentucky restaurant until he passed away on February 21. After his sudden death, the restaurant's accounts were frozen, making it almost impossible for Sesamie Bradshaw — Mike’s cousin and the manager — to keep Buddy's Pizza operating, FOX 56 News reported on February 26.
Born in Frankfort, KY, Mike left his parents' home in his twenties to chase bigger dreams. He moved from his hometown to Los Angeles, then Santa Rosa, where he attended a culinary school to become a chef. After spending eight years in California, Mike returned to Frankfort, where he successfully turned Buddy's Pizza into a bustling neighborhood gathering. Until the very end, Mike loved feeding people and would consciously look out for ways to help the underprivileged. Whenever they had leftover pizza slices, Mike would give them to homeless people or shelters instead of wasting them. "I mean, those are the things that he really did behind the scenes, and he didn’t talk a lot about them because he believed in doing good for doing good… not for publicity. And he was really cool that way," Bradshaw explained. However, everything hit rock bottom after Mike's death, when the piled-up expenses left the restaurant staff struggling to keep the business afloat.

When Mary Nishimuta, a woman who had been running a café in the neighborhood of Buddy's Pizza, noticed the restaurant's condition, she knew she had to step in to support Mike's legacy. So, Nishimuta immediately started a GoFundMe campaign to help the business. "It’s very strange to talk about such a huge part of my life and in the community, and just an enormous personality in the past tense. It’s been a lot. But he sure did leave a lot back for us to see, you know, and to be proud of. So, that’s what we want to do. We want to make him proud and keep his vision going," she confessed. Besides, Mike's well-wishers also organized a celebration to remember his legacy and commemorate his life and the joys he'd spread within his community. Notably, Buddy's Pizza's owner is survived by his wife, Katie Flynn Hedden; daughters Quinn Marshall Hedden and Ava James Hedden; and his adorable fur babies, Belle and Buddy.
Besides food and services, people are more inclined towards restaurants that offer the best hospitality and treat the customers with utmost respect. In fact, 75% of customers treat attentive service as equally important as the quality of food. It means positive staff interaction plays an important role in ensuring their return to the restaurant. Additionally, 58% of diners are likely to share their experience on social media if they are truly satisfied with the service. This word-of-mouth marketing signifies just how important staff engagement is for growing a business, MoldStud reported. Similarly, Buddy's Pizza, which started as just a place, became a home for the locals. While there is no doubt about the food quality, Mike's oh-so-charming nature and his passion for cooking and feeding people good food are the reasons why his community stood by the restaurant even after his demise.
