'I have never had my own identity mansplained to me!'
Women are tired of the number of people waiting to “mansplain” to them. A comedian and podcaster, Cally Beaton (@callybeatoncomedian), shared that she became another unfortunate victim of mansplaining recently. The woman had gone to deliver a speech at an event and one of the men handling the holding slides went bonkers. The man tried to correct and flex his excessive knowledge, leaving the comedian speechless. Beaton acknowledged that her speech went well but there was one error.
“My name on the holding slide was not spelled right, it said ‘Carry,’" the woman recalled. She politely requested that the same be changed to avoid confusion. “I said, ‘Oh, by the way, I’m Cally, it'd be great to just get that right'." The man handling the slides very confidently corrected Beaton, assuring her that as per the information, it was “Carry,” and not “Cally.” Despite multiple attempts to clear the confusion, the man insisted that “Carry” was the correct name. “He said, ‘We were sent a briefing pack and it says 'Carry’ and he showed me but I said, 'I know but I’m Cally, I mean it’s me',” she remarked.
The man refused to acknowledge her name, let alone make the changes. He persisted in informing her that “Carry” was her right name. “I have never had my own identity mansplained to me,” Beaton said, exhausted by the sheer negligence. She added that any other scenario would have been negotiable but the fact that she was there as a resource person delivering a speech made it necessary to have the name right.
She conveyed that the same wouldn’t have been such a bizarre exchange had there been a male in her place, per Newsweek. “It's become part of a culture, as I've had people explain my job to me, tell me how to tell jokes and now someone is literally arguing about my name,” she said. Beaton blamed the stereotypical society and the system for the disrespectful mishap but was all too humored by the same. “Excuse me while I go change my name to 'Carry' on my documents,” she concluded sarcastically in her video. Several people came to Beaton’s support, especially women. @ktowngal613 exclaimed, “A hire was explaining an engineering manual to me and I said, ‘I wrote the manual,’ and he went, “Yeah but…’.”
@mrscavismcbagis recalled, “Delivery told me I spelled my surname wrong and united till I told him that's how my dad spells it.” Beaton added, "I think it shows that there's a real community of people who've had enough of it. Lots of women have had enough of being continually mansplained, and I think we see that. There's some humor in it, but there's also awareness and a serious point behind it. There's an underestimation of women being taken seriously, and I think what happened to me was connected to gender."
