College student's Uber ride takes unexpected turn when driver reveals major flaw in her career plan

Sometimes, random interactions with people who don’t know us change our perspectives about life and things that matter to us the most, including our careers. Not everyone is fortunate enough to be handed a piece of wisdom, sometimes viewed as nothing less than divine intervention, in the strangest possible ways. However, a woman had a lucky day after what seemed like she was returning home from a party. Like any college-goer, she, along with her female friends, had booked an Uber ride, and it so happened that driver-cum-social worker Kev—who goes by @rideswithkev on Instagram—reached there. Their coincidental encounter soon turned into a memorable moment for her, which may change the course of her professional life. The video was reposted by @malebutnoads on Instagram.

A dash cam inside the cab captured the woman’s shocking reaction after realizing she should likely not pursue her dream career: social work. Her Uber driver, Kev, gave her eye-opening advice. After exchanging greetings, she was seen discussing her plans with him. What seemed like a typical Uber ride soon turned into an unprecedented journey for the college-goer, one she had never been on before. “I’m studying to be a social worker,” she said. “Are you?” Kev, who happens to be a social worker himself, asked inquisitively.

Following this, the woman, in a happy mood, explained that she had been pursuing a particular course in college to help her achieve her dream. “I am studying sociology,” said the aspiring social worker, who wanted to help others. “Can I still be a social worker?” she asked Kev. At this point, the confused Uber driver suggested to her that her time in college may eventually result in something fruitful. “You won't come out with a social degree,” Kev pointed out. This raised the college student’s eyebrows as she struggled to understand clearly what her driver was trying to convey. 

“So, I'm not qualified to work in social work?” the woman reiterated. Kev responded frankly that she would not come out as a social worker if she continued to follow the same degree. The woman’s friends, who were relaxing in the back seat, tried to intervene to cut short the serious conversation, as they felt it was not the right time. However, the woman jumped in immediately to stop them and instead tried to convey her astonishment at what she was learning about her career from a stranger. “I'm just finding out that I can't do social work through my degree, and I thought I could,” she told them.

With big dreams, the clueless student turned back to her Uber driver and asked, “What do I have to do?” “Studying social work,” Kev, originally from the Mount Maunganui suburb in New Zealand, hinted at shifting to another course, prompting her friends to laugh. His wholesome way of offering the simple yet most important career advice for her received massive praise on social media. “Uber driver is informed and sensitive about relaying this information,” @march.aes lauded. “She could definitely just do her masters in social work,” @my_divine_comedy_ offered another solution.
