Nothing tests a friendship like a wedding. A woman who goes by u/Effective-Refuse5354 on Reddit thought saying yes to being her longtime friend's bridesmaid would be an honor. However, during the planning period, the bride ignored her friend and even uninvited her husband because he asked a basic question. Furthermore, she says it cost her more than $1,500, several arguments, and ultimately the friendship. She shared her experience in a July 13, 2026, Reddit post, and it received 1,400 upvotes and 116 comments.

More than $1,500 down the wedding drain

The author prefaced by saying that the three other bridesmaids were the bride's best friends, or rather her "tight-knit clique." Nevertheless, she was grateful that her friend wanted her as a bridesmaid. However, the author could not always be there during dress fittings or the bridal shower, which led to a few arguments. She also suspected that the bride wasn't happy with her because she wasn't as involved in wedding planning and coordinating. But she did spend $1,500 on her 3-day destination joint bachelorette/bachelor party, and paid an extra $350 (at the suggestion of the clique). She even bought her own bridesmaid dress. But the author saw the bride's true colors when her husband asked if the rehearsal dinner was paid for. She uninvited him because she thought "he was trying to mooch a free meal," and later re-invited him when she realized it was just a question.

PTO for rehearsal and dinner

She realized how selfish the bride was when she scheduled the rehearsal for a weekday at a venue two hours away from where everyone lived. The rehearsal was at 11 a.m., and dinner was scheduled at 6 p.m. People had to take PTO and spend 7 hours doing nothing when she could've planned better. On the wedding day, the bride ignored her the entire time and intentionally left her out of group photos with her bridesmaids. During her speech, she thanked her bridal party, her bridesmaids, but did not mention the author's name. The author concluded, "I’m just sitting here having spent $1,500+ of my own money to be treated like an afterthought at someone else’s wedding. I feel so stupid for not listening to my gut sooner."

Female friendships

The Survey Center of American Life, conducted in 2021, found that 67% of Americans were friends with people they had known since childhood, and 39% maintained friendships with those they had interacted with online. Moreover, 41% of women reported receiving emotional support from their friends. And while the above Reddit user and the bride may have known each other for years, the sudden change in behavior during wedding preparations certainly put a damper on the friendship.

Painful and expensive lesson

Netizens filled the comment section with moral support for the author after being treated that way by someone she considered a close friend. u/GodsHumbleClown commented, "She sounds really frustrating to be around, it sucks you had to go through that. You're not stupid, she's an a------, please try to remember the difference there!" u/lunaj1999 questioned, "Why were you asked? To make up the numbers?"
