Rich client ambushed a caterer into making 50 extra meals and then demanded a refund. The joke was on them

Chef Momnoms was blindsided by the client's requests, but made sure to include every extra request in the final invoice

Having clients who change their minds at the last minute can be frustrating, but asking for a refund after getting the service is more infuriating. Michelin-trained Chef Momnoms (@themomnoms) took to Threads to share screenshots of her savage response to a wealthy client who felt entitled to ask for a refund. The client not only complained about the menu he had selected but also criticized her conduct. Initially, Chef Momnoms charged them $2,200 as per the contract, but after so many changes to the service, she racked up a whopping number on the second invoice. The post, shared on June 8, has received over 19,000 likes online.

The confrontation

In an extremely detailed text message, Chef Momnoms explained that the client had already approved the menu, but he tried to change it after signing the contract. In fact, she said she had to conduct free "interactive sessions" along with history lessons, for which she otherwise charges $1,500. The chef also confessed that she felt extremely disrespected at the event and recalled guests insulting her menu and constantly disrupting her work. Moreover, Chef Momnoms reminded the client that he had signed a contract for $2,200 for a fixed number of diners, but later invited extra guests without informing her. In addition to the food cost, the private chef also calculated the cost of the experience and the history classes, bringing the total to $6,500, which the client refused to pay. "I will send an invoice for that... I will also make sure that the chef community knows how you all treat service workers...," she added.

Refund, or else

After posting the screenshots, Chef Momnoms received backlash from netizens. In fact, they called her 'rude' and 'unprofessional.' She then shared a message from the client demanding a refund, showing the internet the way he spoke to her. He threatened to post negative reviews and use his 'influence' on social media to warn others not to hire her. He added, "We're really great people. Have done nothing but the best for folks. Nothing you say will outweigh our word and reputation over a lifetime of consistency." The chef clarified that the client and his guests were 40 minutes late for their meal, and still dared to complain about the food being cold.

Private chef market

Hiring a private chef is not something a common man can afford all the time, but research from Market Reports showed that the Personal Chef Services Market has grown significantly. In 2024, 43 million households worldwide had paid someone to prepare their weekly meals. There has been a 17% increase in this industry over the last three years. Additionally, 54% of clients prefer private chefs to prepare their meals in-home rather than off-site. Currently, the U.S. holds one of the largest global shares in the Personal Chef Services Market. While the market is booming, personal experiences like Chef Momnoms' show that difficult clients can often be one of the industry's biggest challenges.

'You’re a rockstar'

Meanwhile, reacting to the chef's story, @eatyourqueeri0s commented, "If you ever need a sous, let me know because just based on these messages, I'd want to work with you." Similarly, @mamacita_954 pointed out, "The fact that he said 'stop hiding behind a contract' shows his lack of integrity!"
