More often than not, people take advantage of our grace and forgiving nature. A 30-year-old (u/ThrowRAbreppy11) realized just that when her ex-boyfriend continued cheating on her, despite several confrontations. Well, a year after they became serious, the man started cheating on her with multiple women. However, the author continued to forgive him every time he was caught, only because she wanted to save their relationship. That changed recently when the author finally asked why, and his answer showed why cheaters do not deserve a second chance. The post, shared on May 7, 2022, has 23,000 upvotes on Reddit.

A cycle of betrayal

After a year into the relationship, the woman discovered her ex-partner's infidelity. Although devastated, she forgave him because the author believed in giving second chances. Moreover, she desperately wanted her relationship to work, so she continued dating him and ignored his unruly behavior. This was possibly the worst decision of her life, but at the time, she thought she was doing the right thing. "That moment kick-started the downward spiral of our relationship," the woman said.

Despite being caught the first time, the man continued cheating on the author quite regularly. "I would confront him; he was honest with me. Because he was upfront, I would always give him another chance," the woman noted. Misinterpreting his shamelessness as a twisted form of honesty, she continued to give him more and more chances. But one day, finally, she reached a breaking point.

The breaking point

Once, the author peeked into her ex's phone and caught him flirting with another woman. Overwhelmed with persistent betrayal, she broke down in tears and decided to confront him again. The author begged him to explain why he was doing this to her despite her doing everything for him, from cooking to cleaning.

Following this, the woman received a raw and brutal response from her boyfriend. "Because I know that you won't do anything about it," he said while looking the woman dead in the eyes. The response was so bad that it opened this woman's eyes for the first time. Not only did she acknowledge that her boyfriend was right, but she also acted on it. The woman then called it quits with her boyfriend and headed straight to her parents' house.

Once a cheater, always a cheater?

Research done by the Institute of Family Studies revealed that 45% of people who cheated in their previous relationship are more likely to continue this habit in their next relationship. In contrast, only about 18% are likely to cheat in their current relationship if they have not done so in the past. The study also highlighted that this behavior is even worse in people who are not confronted. It further explains why, unlike the author, people should consider a hundred times before giving a second chance to a cheating partner.

'He took you for granted'

Meanwhile, reacting to the Reddit post, u/BeautifulLies27 wrote, "You need to gain your self-worth back, you need to be reminded that you are important and that you are something. Don't you let this man treat you like trash. He has taken you for granted and used you. If you don't leave now, the only fool will be you. I pray you find your worth and your peace." At the same time, u/1eyedwillyswife lauded her by saying, "I’m proud of you for getting out. It’s so easy to just stick with the status quo, and it takes courage to leave. You figured out how to handle the situation, and you’re now free."
