Airbnb guest sued a host for $643,000 four months after an injury. When the security footage showed what really happened — the host countersued

Dealing with pestering guests is part of an Airbnb host’s job. But Charles Lamplough (@charleslamplough) experienced something that was beyond just pestering behavior. A guest exaggerated an incident and made a fabricated complaint against him, suing him for $643,000. The complaint jolted him into a shakedown as he tried to make sense of it until old camera footage revealed the truth. In a July 20, 2026 Instagram video, he shared that he cross-acted by filing a counterclaim against the guest for being deceitful and wasting his time, effort, and resources.

Outdoor camera's 3-month limit

According to Lamplough, the incident happened about two years ago. The guest who had stayed in this Airbnb four months earlier suddenly filed a lawsuit against them, charging $643,000 because the stay got them injured. Lamplough wondered why they didn’t communicate this to him while they were staying in the house and why it took them so long. Still, he went ahead to gather clues to confirm whether their account was true. Unfortunately, his outdoor camera only maintained recordings for up to three months, so he had to reach out to the camera company to retrieve the old footage, which took him almost nine-and-a-half months.

More than one broken rule

The moment Lamplough saw the footage, he became determined to countersue the Airbnb guest, not only for deceiving him with a false account, but also for wasting the time and effort he put into gathering the evidence. The footage showed the guest leaning over the railing to control their cat, who was trying to jump. As they leaned, the wind blew them up so they tripped, fell, and got injured. The injury was clearly their fault. On top of it, they broke the Airbnb rule by bringing along a pet during the stay.

Life of an Airbnb host

As observed in Lamplough’s case, life is not easy for an Airbnb host. Many guests often display reckless behaviors, which create problems for the host. House Method surveyed more than 1,000 Airbnb guests and 100 hosts, and, according to the results cited by WKYC, nearly 48% of Airbnb hosts were considering quitting the platform due to difficult guest behavior. Of all the difficult acts, nearly 5% of the guests were observed breaking the rule by bringing a pet when pets weren’t allowed. In the case of Lamplough, the guest not only broke this pet rule but also deceived him by wrongfully shifting the blame for the injury.

'Being an Airbnb host is not for the faint of heart'

Most viewers agreed that countersuing the guest was probably the best decision given that they tried to deflect the blame on the host for something which was their own fault. @diana.staab commented, “They do need to take accountability for their scam. Teach them a lesson.” @beautiful.rubles said, “I’d sue them. They’ve done this before and got away with at least something, so maybe they messed with the wrong person this time.” @lindalewis47 reflected, “Being an Airbnb host is not for the faint of heart.”
