Their cat was behaving very strange that night.
Animals often detect things that humans don't. Their instincts can respond to subtle changes in sound, scent, or environment before it becomes obvious to humans. Similarly, one couple learned this firsthand when their cat's persistent behavior led them to a hidden hazard. Alana Falk–who goes by @crazy_falkin_life on TikTok–shared a video that drew praise for a nearly 4-year-old cat named Trident, who would not let the couple sleep until they realized something was wrong.
Falk said her husband, a firefighter, always kept their bedroom door shut at night. Their cats were used to sleeping outside the room because, as she explained, "no cat wants to be stuck inside." But on that night, Trident’s behavior was different. "He was meowing and scratching at the door incessantly. I could tell something was wrong because he sounded almost panicked," Falk said. As she opened the door, Trident "fell" into the room, then sprinted toward the stairs and into the kitchen. Falk followed and immediately noticed an odd chemical smell. Her husband checked the dishwasher and found that a part had fallen off and landed on the heating element.
It had started melting. "I still say he saved us and the other cats and our dog because the fumes were so strong as soon as I opened the bedroom door," she said, per Newsweek. To mark the event, Falk printed a photo of Trident standing in front of a fire and placed it on the mantel. She said, "When my husband saw it, he rolled his eyes and laughed." She added, "Even though my husband says he doesn't like the cats, I catch him petting them and talking to them when he thinks I'm not looking."
Falk’s video picked up traction, with viewers weighing in on Trident’s behavior. Many praised him as a hero. @aykay011 wrote, "Yes, Trident! 100 percent knew and saved you. Thank you for listening." @humancoffeemaker commented, "Trident is the most skilled orange cat I’ve ever seen! My boy would let us all die in a fire." @savannahjainemusic said, "My cat knew my building was on fire before anyone else did. They’re so clever and such little guardians." @willowrichard60 commented on the picture, "The mantle picture, lol. Trident definitely saved y'all! He knew something was up. Such a smart baby. @kristinachin2 penned, "He definitely knew something was wrong and alerted you guys. I think he saved you guys too, or at the very least, saved you lots of money from more severe damage to the dishwasher or kitchen."
Others shared similar moments with their pets. @DaniNN wrote, "My cat alerted me when the gas nozzle was on. He's the one who turned it on, but at least he told me." @midlifetiktoker shared, "I know someone who accidentally left their gas stove on overnight, and their cat screamed and scratched at doors to wake up the whole house." @t04d_m4n added, "When I was 19, my cat saved my life. I got too drunk at a party I had at my apartment. I passed out on my back, woke up to her bopping me and hitting my face, immediately rolled over, and vomited."
