'Well, you have ruined my evening,' he admitted on camera.
Legendary cardiac surgeon Asif Hasan thought he was simply receiving a lifetime award for his long career. The recently retired surgeon from Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital had just received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards when the ceremony delivered one more surprise: 19 former patients, now aged between 10 and 43, walked onto the stage to thank the doctor who had helped save or transform their lives. The emotional moment aired on The Mirror (@dailymirror) on October 23, 2026, and has gained 8.4 million views and over 535,000 likes.
The program celebrated the doctor for his remarkable career at a major hospital. Standing under the bright lights, the doctor accepted his trophy. The show hosts revealed a deeply emotional twist. "What you have achieved is nothing short of miraculous. And tonight we all honour your heart. But what you don't know, Asif and I said earlier we were sneaky, and we really are sneaky, is that some of them are actually here to honour you tonight."
Nineteen individuals walked forward to surprise the man who had kept them alive. One of the young patients stepped up to the microphone with tears in their eyes. "I see it's a greatest honor of my life to be here to see you receive this award," the patient shared. "You were there for my family in our darkest days. You gave me a chance when everyone else had given up on me, and you gave me a second chance at this wonderful life, and I'm so grateful to you."
Visibly shaken by the sudden reunion, Dr. Hasan reacted to the tearful moment with genuine disbelief. Another clip from the same event showed Dr. Hasan giving his Speech. "Well, you have ruined my evening," he admitted playfully on camera. "By showing all these people. I am gobsmacked. You are sneaky. I have to get a tissue... just to get myself together. It's just unbelievable. I mean, I have no words now." He then humbly shifted the spotlight away from himself and onto his team, adding, "I was just doing my job. However, I had the good fortune of working with some extraordinary people in Newcastle who were crazy... their whole life was dedicated to looking after the patient. And also I worked in this extraordinary organisation, which is the NHS."
Medical milestones highlight the intense dedication needed in modern cardiac care. Data from the CDC Data and Statistics on Congenital Heart Defects page details vital progress across the United States. Heart defects affect nearly 1% of births per year in the United States. About 1 in 4 babies born with a heart defect have a critical heart defect requiring surgery in their first year of life. About 95% of babies born with a non-critical heart defect are expected to survive to at least 18 years of age. Moreover, 69% of babies born with a critical heart defect are also expected to reach at least 18 years of age.

Online viewers flooded the comment section with deep admiration, calling the emotional tribute one of the most heartwarming moments on social media. Praising the surgeon's extraordinary legacy, user @doctorshireen posted, "A true hero. So well deserved". Meanwhile, @gibbsy.91_agreed with the widespread sentiment, writing, "What a human being, truly deserved this award."
