The couple proved 'first impressions' don't really mean everything.

There is nothing more surreal than watching your sister step out for a first date with someone special. While you're happy that she might find somebody who will cherish her for life, you are also nervous about people breaking her heart. Amy VanWingerden's (@itsamyvw) brothers must have felt something very similar when they first saw her with Samuel VanWingerden, their brother-in-law, except they never thought the couple would ever end up together. However, fate had different plans, and only after a year, Amy and Samuel said 'I do,' proving them wrong in the best possible way. The US-based content creator shared both her brothers' first reactions on April 17. The video has received 77.4 million views on Amy's Instagram page.
Amy's brothers, Justus Shaw and Arrow Johnson, were watching the couple go on their first date from a distance, and let's just say they did not have great things to say about Samuel. Well, as they watched the couple head towards the car, the brothers expected their sister's date to at least open the door for her, but when that didn't happen, they immediately disapproved of Samuel. "I'm going to save this for their wedding day if they ever get married... probably won't," one of her brothers announced, and the other one agreed.
Only a year later, Amy and Samuel not only got married, but they are now expecting their first child in June. On January 2, Amy posted a video on Instagram to share the emotional moment they first realized she was pregnant. The couple had been married for about 5 months and wasn't expecting a pregnancy. Nevertheless, both Amy and her husband were thrilled by the good news, and the duo has been sharing their pregnancy journey online ever since.
Amy's brothers predicted that their sister and her then-date would not end up together just because they didn't have a good impression of Samuel the first time they saw him. While first impressions matter, they may not be enough to decide whether two people will end up together. In fact, a 2022 survey by Match found that almost half of American respondents (49%) have fallen for someone they were not initially attracted to. Interestingly, more women (52%) than men (44%) agreed to it. Moreover, the study observed that people are now looking beyond physical appearance when choosing their partners. As a matter of fact, 94% of singles in the survey said they want someone they can trust and confide in, while 92% mentioned open communication, and 92% shared their desire for an emotionally mature partner. Now, people don't usually pick up on these traits in an initial meeting or a first date. This further suggests that first impressions may not be enough to form an opinion about somebody.

Meanwhile, reacting to the Instagram reel, @iammyversion commented, "Bro must have had to do so much to convince them that he really wants to marry her, and they be like, 'But you can’t even open the door.'" Similarly, @kayleedeberti added, "Most, if not all, siblings genuinely think these things and also say them out loud about each other's partners, by the way. Always be on your A game."
