Breakfast with a catch
The author explained that he and his wife made more money than his sister, Lilith, and her husband, Josh. This was one reason they always offered to pay whenever all four of them went out to eat together. "I don't mind paying for my friends/family to have a good time. We pay ~95% of the time. I'm fine with that," the man said. But one morning, Josh invited him for breakfast to celebrate his new work promotion. Now, the author was unaware of his promotion or that Josh had pulled their server aside when they sat down to give his credit card. Once seated, both placed their orders. The author, as usual, had called for his "Lumberjack Breakfast" — a combination of pancakes, eggs of your choice, bacon or sausages, hash brown, biscuits, and a coffee. "It's the 2nd most expensive thing on the breakfast menu," he said.
The flex fell flat
After their meal, Josh insisted on paying the bill and left a decent tip. However, 10 minutes after the author got home, he received a text from his brother-in-law. He asked why he ordered something so expensive despite knowing his financial situation. The author admitted he had no idea they were struggling. In the author's case, he never expected Josh to pay the bill. Things had been good between them, but Josh's comment changed their dynamics.
