A 24-year-old woman (u/traditional_solid879) was astounded when her brother insisted she continue paying the rent on behalf of his unemployed wife until "they can afford the apartment on their own." Well, it all started when the author decided to move out of the 2-bedroom flat in Florida she shared with her brother and father so her sister-in-law could move in after her marriage. But things went South, when, instead of appreciating her goodwill, her brother called her selfish for refusing to help family. Frustrated, she turned to Reddit to vent her frustration on July 30, 2026. Her post has received over 4,000 upvotes.

A quiet sacrifice

For almost 4 years, the author shared a room with her older brother, while their father occupied the other room in their apartment. In her post, she explained that she was the one who actually invested time and money in decorating the space. "I put a lot of time, effort, and money into creating a comfortable home for us," the author confessed. However, things changed when her brother decided to marry his fiancée from another country. Now, as per the plan, his wife was supposed to move in with her brother while she moved to her mom's place, located about four hours away in another city. The author knew she'd have to start everything from scratch: from finding a new job to adjusting to a new city life, but she decided to do it all just for the sake of her family.

‘Just say you have a money problem’

Meanwhile, the lease was supposed to end in two months when the author informed her brother about moving out of the flat. And that's when the problem started. Her brother suddenly started demanding that she continue paying the rent even after she was gone, because his wife didn’t have a job yet. “I genuinely don't understand how that makes any sense. […] His wife moving in and contributing financially is their responsibility, not mine," the author expressed.

Moreover, when she refused to pay his expenses, her brother started playing the victim and blaming her for overreacting. “If you don't want to help your family, just say it. Just say you have a money problem,” he told her. The author confessed that she couldn't understand why her brother and his wife wanted to stay in an apartment they couldn't afford. Frustrated, she decided to take everything she bought with her own money.

Family vs. finances

As observed in this case, one-sided financial responsibility often leads to resentment among family members, including partners. In fact, a study (Meyer & Sledge, 2022) cited by Sage Choice found that finances are the primary conflict in 40% of disagreements reported among people in long-term relationships. Similarly, a survey recorded in Experian’s The Cost of Living podcast reported that one in five (19%) young adults, specifically 18-35-year-olds, might end a long-standing relationship due to financial stressors. As per the Reddit post, while it isn't clear whether the author had to cut off relations with her brother, she did mention that their relationship changed after their confrontation.

'He's insane'

Reddit readers urged the woman to stand her ground because her brother was insane to have such a demand. For instance, u/VirtualRemedy commented, “Your brother is insane for thinking you owe rent for a place you won't be living in.” u/Ok_leg_1158 said, “I don't understand why you have to change your entire life because your brother is getting married. He needs to make accommodations for her, not you. To ask you to pay rent on a place that you're not in is crazy and entitled. I would try to discuss him moving out.”
