Bride trusted her BFF of 6 years with the speech. She roasted the bride — then made a confession about the groom that left the room stunned

Wedding speeches are usually meant to celebrate the couple, but one bridesmaid turned hers into an unexpected confession that left the bride questioning a six-year friendship. Gemma, the bridesmaid and a longtime friend of the couple, had seemed honored to be part of the bridal party. On the wedding day, however, her wedding speech took a surprisingly bitter turn. She went from criticizing the bride's expectations of friendship to making a confession about the groom that no one in the room saw coming. In a June 29, 2026 Instagram video of the Everybody Has A Secret (@ehaspodcast) podcast, host Annabelle Lee read out the case of this bride named Millie. The video has been viewed more than 1.1 million times.

Bridesmaid drops a bombshell

Apart from being a “wildcard friend,” Gemma also used to work with Millie’s husband, and she was good friends with the couple. She seemed to feel “honored” when she was invited to be a part of the bridal party and make the wedding speech. But even before the bride had walked down the aisle, Gemma got highly intoxicated. Everyone dismissed her tipsiness, thinking that she was happy and celebrating. But then came the moment of the bridesmaids’ speeches. “Instead of recapping heartfelt memories, she launched into what felt like a drunken therapy session, mixed with a bizarre attempt to make herself the main character,” Lee read.

Astronomical expectations

Instead of recounting happy moments they spent together during their friendship, Gemma started ranting about how astronomical Millie’s expectations were in friendship and that no one could live up to her standards. Then she made a claim that caught everyone off guard. Her family and friends were caught off guard, while Millie's husband looked at her in “sheer disbelief.” All of a sudden, Gemma brought up how she was the only reason why this wedding was happening, that she was the one who pushed the couple to have their first date. In her words, though, were "undertones of resentment."

Chilling confession

Before the bride and groom could digest her embittered words, Gemma made a confession that left the room silent. “I always had a massive crush on him,” Gemma confessed, referring to the groom. For days, the bride couldn’t get herself to contact Gemma or ask her for an explanation. A week later, when she contacted her, Gemma behaved as if nothing had happened. She laughed it off by saying that although she had a crush on Millie’s husband in the past, the infatuation was over now. The confession left Millie hurt and confused. The following day, she noticed that Gemma unfollowed her on social media. “A week later, and I still feel completely distraught that a so-called best friend had the audacity to ruin my wedding day like that,” Millie regretted.

While Gemma's behavior may seem extreme, research suggests that the people in a couple's social circle can play a role in relationship satisfaction. A 2023 study of 222 couples found that the quality of their outside friendships was associated with relationship satisfaction. Friends and family members who supported the relationship and liked the partner were among the strongest positive predictors, while negative qualities in individual friendships were associated with poorer relationship satisfaction.

Friend or foe?

Viewers were equally stunned by Gemma's behavior, with many questioning whether she had ever truly been a friend to Millie. @scblanc2 commented, “I’m shocked she wasn’t asked to leave the wedding after that speech.” @spotted.onyx said, "Normalize ripping the mic out of people’s hands and asking them to leave.” @hey_its_jess2 said, “When people show you who they are, believe them. When they create a narrative in their head that is delusional and see themselves out, let them.”
