The dress cost $400, which was not feasible for the bridesmaid to afford as a student

It is understandable when a bride goes over the top while planning their wedding, but one bride took things so far that she ended up scamming her own bridesmaids. The story resurfaced in 2023 when u/raredontstare reshared a post that had originally been shared and later deleted by u/ShamedShamingShamer back in 2019. Six women, including the author, were asked to be bridesmaids for their friend's wedding. However, when the author tried on her $400 dress, she accidentally found out that the bride had actually scammed her bridesmaids. The post from 2023 received 8,400 upvotes and 179 comments.
The author was still in college at the time, so money was tight. The dress cost $400, and the Maid of Honor (MOH) offered to pay with her credit card, so they could pay her back later in installments. It was the MOH's responsibility to coordinate dress fittings and alterations, if needed. However, the author could not join them when they went to pick up dresses because of finals week, and went on her own later.
The MOH assured her that everything was paid for; all she had to do was pick it up. She tried on the dress, and it fit her perfectly, but when she was about to leave, someone yelled, "Hey, that will be $200!" Embarrassed, the shop owner came running and explained that the dress was already paid for. That was when it hit her; the dress was $200, not $400 as the bride claimed.

After this discovery, the author confronted the MOH about the price of the dress, and the MOH ultimately confessed that it was the bride's idea to use her card and charge the bridesmaids double. She did this so she could pay for her wedding dress. The author told the other bridesmaids what she found out, and four of them immediately dropped out of the wedding.
The remaining two bridesmaids were the bride's cousins, forced to keep up appearances by their mother. Years later, the author shared an update that she, the MOH, and the bride are still not on speaking terms. Not only did the bride scam her bridesmaids, but she scammed her MOH as well, making her pay for the wedding dress. At the time of the update, the bride had not apologized for what she did.

Weddings come with a lot of expenses, which is why people plan how to manage their finances beforehand. However, the costs do not fall solely on the bride and groom. Members of the wedding party, family, and guests often end up spending a significant amount of money as well. A Lending Tree survey found that people who were part of the wedding bridal party were subjected to debt as well. 40% of bridesmaids, groomsmen, and other bridal party members regret some of the expenses they've incurred during the wedding. But no matter how expensive a wedding gets, that doesn't justify this bride's "idea" to pay for it.

People thought that the bride's behavior was absolutely despicable. u/The_Sceptic_Lemur wrote, "That was a very satisfying read. That bride seems like the absolute worst person; good to know everyone dropped her like the asshole potato she is." u/Tom1252 commented, "Probably controversial, but I feel like as a willing accomplice, the MOH got what she deserved, getting stuck with a several thousand dollar bill. That bride, though. Logically, I understand that people who revel in getting one over on others exist, but they just feel alien to me, inhuman."
