She recounted how she spent so much time trying to understand, excuse, and even rationalize the man's behavior.

After dropping a whopping $40,000 on a picturesque destination wedding in Hawaii, you would expect a newlywed couple to make the most of their first night together. But for this one groom, his bride was merely an afterthought. Sitting alone in a candlelit honeymoon suite at 1:00 a.m., Victoria Prince (@vprincemusic), the bride, found herself crying on the couch after her new husband chose a substance over her. Distressed, she called her mother, who delivered her a grim warning that would haunt her for years to come. She revealed the entire story on Instagram on 11 August 2026, garnering over 108,000 views.
What was supposed to be a romantic milestone for Prince turned into heartbreak just hours after she exchanged vows back in 2010. After getting married to the man of her dreams in Hawaii, or so she thought, she found herself sitting on a couch and crying her eyes out. She found herself all alone in a room filled with candles and rose petals. All of this just because her "new husband chose a substance over me," she recalls.

Distraught and seeking support, Prince reached out to her mother, who arrived to find her newly married daughter completely shattered. In that devastating moment, her mother offered a blunt yet precise observation. "If you stay, there will be many more nights like this," her mother said to her. Although Prince didn't act on her mother's advice immediately, she never forgot those words. This was because her mother turned out to be right.

Rather than walking away from the obvious warning sign, Prince remained in the relationship for years. She constantly looked out for excuses to justify her husband's actions. She recounted how she spent so much time trying to understand, excuse, and even rationalize the man's behavior. She hoped that one day he'd realize and change for good, but unfortunately the day never came. It was during this time that she remembered her mother's words. "He already showed me from day one exactly what my life would be like with him," she said.

Nonetheless, eventually Prince split up with that man. That is why, reflecting on her hard journey, she urged her followers to never ignore red flags. She explained how they were a glimpse into the future. "The red flag is not a warning about what's going to happen; it's a preview," she said. Regardless, this entire incident highlights a much broader issue. According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, 34.6% of participants listed substance abuse as a major factor in their divorce, and at least one partner in 50% of the couples.

As for the people, they agreed with Prince and thought that she should've listened to her mother. @lisajae_co commented, "Totally can relate!! Mom’s intuition is like no other... Glad you got out eventually! Love your story!" At the same time, @aaguard wrote, "My mom always tells me. “People don’t change!” And she’s right. People will adjust temporarily, but then they’ll go back to who they really are."
