Bride was alarmed to find MIL 'trying on' her wedding dress. Then she saw her fiancé’s secret iPad message

The MIL dismissed the blame, saying it was an 'accident,' and she only wanted to feel as 'young and beautiful' as the bride

Wedding planning can bring families closer, but it can also expose problems that were easier to overlook before. For one bride-to-be, a conflict with her future mother-in-law soon turned into a bigger question about her fiancé and the relationship itself. In a Reddit post, a Virginia-based woman (u/AdministrativeMain7) shared that she called off her wedding after her future mother-in-law (MIL) allegedly destroyed her wedding dress. But the situation got worse when her fiancé took his mother's side.

Beyond repair

One day, the bride walked in on her MIL trying on her $11,000 wedding dress in her fiancé’s room. The gown was badly torn and beyond repair. When her fiancé asked his mother to pay for the damage, she dismissed it as an “accident,” saying she only wanted to feel as “young and beautiful” as the bride. The loss hurt even more because the bride’s late mother had left her the money to buy her dream dress. The beading was destroyed, the sheer back and tulle train were ripped, and the seams had split.

Pick a side

Despite the emotional hurt, her fiancé tried to minimize the damage. When visiting the seamstress, he repeated her mother’s words and said that it was just an accident and his mother was simply trying to “relive her model days.” Incensed at his avoidant behavior, the woman interrupted to tell the truth: her MIL had tried on her dress without permission, and since it didn’t fit, it ended up getting spoiled in the process.

She told her MIL she would sue for the damages and looked up the small claims court in Virginia. Her fiancé called his mother again, but she began crying and guilt-tripping him, saying money mattered more than his own mother. He ended the call by comforting her and promising to speak to his bride-to-be. “I lost it. I screamed at him. I cried harder than I probably ever have cried because I honestly feel that he took her side over mine,” the woman wrote. When she threatened to cancel the wedding, he told his mother she could not attend.

One incriminating message

The relief did not last. On a shared iPad, she found messages showing he had only disinvited his mother to calm her down and planned to convince her to forgive his mom later. Though they stayed engaged and agreed to couples therapy, she said the trust was badly damaged. “We are still together and remain engaged, but things are very, very, strained between us,” she said.

This woman is not alone. According to The Guardian, a study of hundreds of families over two decades revealed that more than 60% of women admitted that the relationship with their female in-law caused them long-term unhappiness and stress. Another study published in the International Journal of Neurolinguistics & Gestalt Psychology documented a survey of older women and revealed that 68% of the women had strained relationships with their daughter-in-law. Results also demonstrated that a greater non-rapport with the MIL was associated with lower marital satisfaction.

Meanwhile, Reddit readers chimed in to defend and support her feelings. u/Grey9Ghost said, “I do hope his friend is talking sense to him. Good luck with the counseling. You are doing the right thing because this needs to be resolved before you consider a wedding.” u/Aladayle shared, “Aside from what everyone else has said — if, after counseling, you find you simply don't want to put in the work with him, no one here will blame you. It is a long, hard road ahead, and you are perfectly entitled to give up and turn around.”
