All through this incident, the groom stood by the bride, yet the MIL refused to understand.
A woman (u/serenaivorycloud) found herself in the middle of a drama after her future mother-in-law tried to use her wedding to fulfill social obligations. The bride and groom had already booked the wedding venue when the MIL objected to the limited guest list for her side. In fact, she gave them a list of 22 people she wanted to attend their wedding from her side. Since the venue could accommodate 90 guests, the author asked her MIL to invite only 6 more people. But instead of understanding the situation, she refused and accused her son's fiancée of being controlling. The post shared on October 11, 2026, has received over 2,000 upvotes.
AITA for telling my future mother-in-law she can't add 22 people to our wedding?

The bride shared that she and her fiancé, Andre, were paying for their wedding without any help from family. "Our venue holds 90 people max, and we're at about $118 a head with food, so the list is exactly 90," she explained. In fact, the author said they were so sure of the venue that they'd also paid a $3,000 deposit to book the place. The bride and groom had also prepared the wedding guest list when Lorraine, the MIL, started complaining. Apparently, she wanted to invite 22 guests, and “half her life” was missing from the list. These guests included members of her book club, her co-workers, and neighbors that Andre had met at most twice. The couple sat with her and explained the budget constraints and venue capacity. The author even cancelled a few of her guests to accommodate six from Lorraine's side. But seemingly, it wasn’t enough for the old lady.
Like a child, Lorraine nagged her to cancel her own college friends because just six seats were insulting to her. When the couple explained the venue couldn't expand its guest limit, she blamed them for choosing a place that was too small and lousy. Since the couple had already paid a $3,000 security deposit, they couldn’t switch the venue, but they still offered to include all of Lorraine’s guests in a backyard party in June. Lorraine refused to understand and instead launched a smear campaign against the bride, telling everyone that she is too “controlling.” Lorraine was doing this even without offering to pay for the extra seats she so stubbornly demanded.

Lorraine’s behavior likely stems from her old age. According to a study by Sonja Radjenovic, older adults need to maintain their existing relationships and social life, particularly during special life events, to ensure "higher levels of well-being." This suggests Lorraine was right in wanting to involve her social circle in her son's wedding. However, from the couple's perspective, including her entire social circle might not always be feasible, especially as the average cost per wedding guest is $292, according to The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study.

Meanwhile, Reddit users sided with the bride and asked her not to entertain the obstinate mother-in-law. u/Creepy_Addict commented, “Revoke her 6 seats. She wants all or nothing, so she gets nothing. It is your fiancé's and your wedding, not hers. She isn't entitled to have any of her 'friends'; she just wants to show off. Also, she contributed zero to the wedding. I'd tell her the list is set and they can come to the party in June.” u/Responsible_Worry180 said, “You and your future husband wanted a small intimate wedding...full stop. End of discussion. The bride and groom's friends come before MIL's book club. All that being said, it is best if you let him deal with his mother.”
