A wedding afterparty is often incomplete without a spread of delicious dishes from a carefully curated buffet menu. But what happens when a bride decides to serve only vegan food at her wedding? Things can get messy when guests opt for alternatives instead of embracing the menu. This is exactly what happened to u/Conscious-Option-400, a bride who took to Reddit to share her frustration after her wedding guests—particularly her family—refused to eat the food she had carefully planned for her reception.

The 28-year-old bride and her 30-year-old husband, both vegans for nearly three years, decided to go all-out with a completely vegan reception dinner. They spent months collaborating with a chef to design a gourmet five-course meal, featuring dishes like mushroom Wellington, truffle risotto, roasted vegetable tarts, and more.

"We spent nearly $15,000 on the food alone," she revealed in her Reddit post. "We deliberately didn't mention the food was vegan on the invitations because we wanted people to enjoy it without prejudice. Every dish was designed to be delicious and satisfying, regardless of dietary preference."

Despite the effort and expense, the bride was disappointed when many guests—especially her own family—refused to even try the food, leaving her feeling disheartened on what should have been a joyous occasion.

But things did not turn out as per her wishes. During the reception, she noticed that her brother Tom wasn't at his table. A while later, Tom and some of her cousins arrived with 20 large boxes of pizzas. They started handing over the pizza to the wedding guests, telling them it was the "real food" if anyone wanted it. "I was mortified. The caterers looked so embarrassed, and several guests hadn't even tried our carefully planned menu yet. When I confronted Tom, he said my aunt had texted him that all the food is just vegetables and they couldn't let people go hungry at a wedding," the woman continued.

The pizza ended up winning over the vegan spread, and people only took pictures of the vegan buffet as a joke. "My mother-in-law posted on Facebook about how her son's wedding was saved by pizza because the bride tried to force everyone to eat rabbit food. I ended up crying in the bathroom, and my husband asked Tom and the cousins to leave. This caused a scene, and now half the family is calling us stuck-up and saying we ruined our own wedding by pushing our beliefs on everyone," she concluded. She wondered if she was in the wrong for not informing her wedding guests about the vegan menu beforehand.

Many people sided with the bride, whose food arrangement went to waste because of the pizza. Whereas others suspected the story to be a "rage bait." u/Glittering_Search_41 mentioned, "Carnivore here. I do not need to be warned that a meal I'm invited to doesn't contain meat. I'll try whatever food is on offer. Sometimes, people give me food I don't care for." u/fidelesetaudax noted, "I am sorry your day was ruined. But your planning was so self-involved and short-sighted that was almost bound to happen. Every dish was not designed to be delicious and satisfying regardless of dietary preference."

u/Goidelica remarked, "Listen, I'm a vegan but this is classic self-righteous noob vegan move that you tried to pull. I wouldn't eat most of the rancid stuff you served. When you're catering to a crowd you actually have to cater to them. You don't treat it like some kind of gastronomic lecture. It was a bad move of your brother to do that, but I am not surprised at all." u/FizzingSlit added, "I bet the vegan food was awesome though. It probably got upstaged because people tend to want pizza more than vegetable medleys or mushroom Wellingtons, so didn't give it a fair shake."
