'Tom, I'm the daughter of the man whose heart's inside you, and I'm going to get married on Aug. 6th,' Stepien said

Jeni Stepien lost her father 10 years ago after he was fatally shot on his way back home from work, but he still managed to be with her in spirit as she walked down the aisle. Jeni was from Arlington, Virginia, and two days after her father passed, his heart was donated to Arthur Thomas from New Jersey. Her father passed away in September 2006, and she married Paul Maenner 10 years later on August 6, 2016, where Jeni and Tom met for the first time, according to ABC News America. Jeni's father had been dead for a decade, but she managed to find a way to include him in the wedding in the most special way.
Arthur "Tom" Thomas is a retired college advisor who was waiting for a heart transplant for almost 10 years due to his preexisting heart condition. "I was on death's door when he was murdered, and I needed a heart, or I was going to be dying within the next few days," Tom told CBS Evening News. Jeni and Tom kept in touch throughout the years after the heart transplant, but it was one letter that brought both of them closer than ever. Jeni had asked Tom to give her away during her wedding. Her letter read, "Tom, I'm the daughter of the man whose heart's inside you, and I'm going to get married on Aug. 6th. One further thing, if you're willing, would you walk me down the aisle?" Tom was ecstatic that she wanted her father's heart to be present at her wedding, and he agreed to it.

Right before Jeni walked down the aisle, she shared a bittersweet moment with Tom. He said to her, "If it's OK with you, when I'm ready to offer your hand to your husband, you can touch my chest and feel my heart," Jeni told ABC News. She also said that her wedding day was perfect, and "it was so awesome to have a piece of my father physically there." Jeni also had wonderful things to say about her late father. "He was so charismatic, and he was such an athlete. He played baseball religiously and tried out for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the '70s. He was very caring. He really wanted the best for us girls and my mom."

In certain countries, direct communication between the families of the donor and the recipient is strictly prohibited. However, in the U.S., the organ procurement organizations (OPOs) believe that communication between the two parties can be healthy. However, before any contact, both families have to agree to communicate with each other. One family would send an anonymous letter that would be reviewed by the OPO, and if the other family wished to respond, they could send a letter through the OPO as well. The first family has the choice to continue getting to know the other family or cut off contact. The HRSA revealed that 103,223 people are on the national transplant waiting list. In 2024, more than 48,000 transplants were performed. It also states that every donor has the ability to save up to 8 lives and improve the lives of 75 more.

Jeni shared a father-daughter dance with Tom and a special dance with her mother. She was grateful to have Tom be there with her on her special day. "We just talked the whole time and smiled at each other. I was just so blessed that he was there with us." Tom is forever grateful to the Stepiens for donating their father's heart. He believed that sharing such a special moment on Jeni's big day brought them closer. He said, "When a family gives life to someone they don't even know, in their darkest moment... it's unbelievable."
