'When he told me — I’ll be there Friday with you — I just burst into tears.'
Many people spend years waiting for the right partner to build a life with. But for one woman, a long-awaited wedding turned into heartbreak just days before she was set to walk down the aisle. Tobi Elder, a TikTok creator from Nebraska, had planned a beach ceremony in Hawaii after three years of dating her fiancé. But as she sat in a salon preparing for the trip, a flood of messages revealed a betrayal that brought everything to a halt: her fiancé had been cheating on her for a long time. Heartbroken, Elder boarded a plane to Hawaii alone, but her father made sure it didn't stay that way. In a video posted by Elder on her TikTok page @tobielder, she realized that although she had lost her partner, there were people who would stay by her side forever.
Recalling her experience with Newsweek, Elder shared, "I decided to go [on the honeymoon] alone and heal. Once arriving in Hawaii, I completely fell apart and broke down. [I] don't think I've ever felt so low and broken." The betrayal was especially painful given her history. "I was in a previous relationship that was extremely toxic and abusive. So I waited three years before getting married as I was hesitant about being hurt again." Back home, both of her parents were heartbroken for her. Her mother wanted to go join her, but it was her father, Rob, who acted immediately.
In the video, Rob walks through the airport and later sits across from his daughter at a café, drinking orange juice. The caption reads, "I can say I am loved and my dad is ALWAYS there." "When he told me, 'I’ll be there Friday with you,' I just burst into tears because I was so, so heartbroken and alone," Elder told the outlet. "My dad had always been there when needed. [He] is an amazing human being with so much love, and he's so funny," she added. That kind of father-daughter relationship has been the center of a lot of studies. A 2018 study found that daughters who share a positive bond with their fathers tend to experience fewer interpersonal problems and greater emotional stability.
Users watching the video shared their admiration and longing for a relationship like the one Elder captured. @raquelramosmusic wrote, "When your heart is healed, you’re going to be THRILLED to have those memories with your dad instead of wasting Hawaii on the wrong person." @1madfashion added, "Dad deserves an award for being AWESOME. Tell him he’s one of a kind. Unfortunately, I didn't have a dad growing up, but you are so lucky. He’s a beautiful angel. Much love from Texas."
@saranichole35 joked, "Is he adopting? I’m 39, so I have everything covered, just looking for a dad who cares that much." @thedorkknight219 shared, "Hug him, let him know you’re proud and thankful for him. I lost my dad. I would give anything to see him one last time." @rhonda_frost wrote, "This made me cry more than your bad news. I’m so glad you’re getting to spend this time with your Dad."
