The polka dot balck-and-white dress is believed to be designed by Victor Costa.
Recreating and reusing wedding gowns of mothers has never gone out of fashion, especially when social media is full of people from all over the world repurposing vintage gowns for their weddings. In fact, some swear by their mother's dress as their lucky charm. Unfortunately for Sarah Robertson (@sarahroberts0n), her favourite white polka dot dress — one that her mother had worn to her wedding — was misplaced quite a while ago. In her viral TikTok video shared on August 15, which has garnered over 4.5 million views so far, Sarah shares a montage of her parents' wedding from the 90s, which featured her mother donning a stunning black-and-white polka dot wedding gown.
Sarah had always envisioned walking down the aisle wearing her mother's black and white gown, but it got misplaced after being handed to Sarah's mother's friend. Much to their dismay, the friend gave away the dress after she thought the daughter would not be interested in rewearing the gown. However, that did not stop Sarah from going on a mission to find the dress. Thirty years following her mother's wedding, Sarah Robertson now seeks the help of her TikTok following to track down the lost dress for her own Italian wedding the next year.
Speaking to PEOPLE, Sarah revealed that she has been on a hunt to find vintage dresses for he wedding, when she remembered her mother's wedding dress that appealed to her forever. Using her TikTok handles, Robertson shared pictures of her parents' wedding in Lake Como, Italy, from the early 90s. Sarah believes the dress was designed by Victor Costa, although TikTok users suggest that it could be a Jessica McClintock or Valentino Garavani design as well. Her video, captioned, "TikTok, pls do your thing and help me find the dress," has comments filled with users helping Sarah hunt down her mother's vintage gown.
Social media has consistently showcased its power to discover lost items and stories through its collective efforts. A striking example is Sarah’s search for her mother’s vintage wedding gown, where people from around the world joined in sharing leads that could trace similar dresses and help identify the original piece. This kind of collective action is also reflected in the story of a backpacker who lost his GoPro camera in Australia. While Robertson may not have anticipated the reach her video would garner, the phenomenon has been studied by the University of Ilorin, which found that social media is widely used for retrieving information that is challenging to obtain through physical means.
Many users under Robertson's video helped her with the lead to find the dress, while many others joined to wish her luck in finding the original piece. One TikTok user named @yellowumbrella00 wrote, "I hope you find it. I did see some Victor Costa polka dot dresses online, but not your mom's. If you don't find it, maybe you can purchase one of those for the rehearsal dinner."
@elllzzzbeth called the polka dot-style wedding gown 'iconic'. "To-be bride seeks TikTok's help to find her mother's lost polka dot wedding dress, video goes viral," they wrote. Although Sarah continues to search for her mother's gown, she hopes to wear it to the aisle, considering her wedding countdown is ticking!
