Bride demotes cousin from being maid of honor for being too fat: 'I like people with discipline'

A woman was demoted by her cousin from maid of honor to bridesmaid for being fat before being uninvited from the wedding altogether. The woman shared a text message from the 'bridezilla' that explicitly states that she was demoted to bridesmaid for being fat before being chided for not having "any control of (herself) to go on a diet.” The video posted by Lia (@liainlouisiana) on the platform has been viewed more than 120k times and garnered more than 5k likes. Lia shared the text she got from her cousin, Alejandra, and shared a clip of her biting into a sandwich as the sound “It’s like a reward” plays in the background, reported Daily Dot.

The text message on the video shows the exchange between Lia and her cousin. It starts with Alejandra telling Lia that the bridesmaid group, “isn’t a therapy session” after apparently telling her to go on a diet. “Are you embarrassed?” Lia asked her cousin. “Of what … of telling you to go on a diet .. no … it’s my wedding,” Alejandra responded. Lia explicitly accuses Alejandra of demoting her "from maid of honor because I’m fat.” Alejandra honestly replies, “Yes.”

Alejandra then says Lia doesn't have the willpower to diet. “You don’t have any control of yourself to go on a diet. I like people with discipline… You are still a bridesmaid," she tells Lia like it's a consolation prize, before signing off. "I’m going to sleep goodnight." Lia responded by wishing her goodnight and telling Alejandra she loved her. Many criticized Lia for telling Alejandra 'Love you,' even after being disrespected. 

The video went viral and soon became a conversation within the family, which led to Lia being uninvited by her cousin. “Yeah, I told her about it because it was kind of blowing up and she said I was uninvited, then tried to make it seem like it was my choice I wasn’t going,” she wrote in the comments on one of her videos. Many users supported her and called her to not give space to toxic people in her life even if it meant cutting off loved ones. "Your cousin is crazy, You're beautiful and anyone (but your cousin) would be lucky to have you at their wedding! Good riddance" wrote one person. Another asked Lia to not defend her cousin, "I see you excusing behavior in replies, so I just want you to know there is absolutely no justification to be treated like this, especially by family."

"I'm not going to the wedding. I have cried all afternoon," she said in a follow-up video where she was close to tears. "I am uninvited, so I'm not going. I will return my bridesmaid dress and that's that. I'm going to drink and watch Murder, she wrote." She then said it would be a good opportunity to reevaluate her life. "First step is respecting myself. You guys said I should respect myself more and not let people treat me like trash," she said, visibly emotional. She also posted an update saying she had blocked her cousin’s number. "I wish she understood my struggles with food and my body. My BMI says I’m obese 😩. I’ve struggled with this all my life," she wrote.
