Crista went from losing a family heirloom for her wedding to having her very own Cinderella moment.

Planning an entire wedding is already a huge task in itself, but imagine losing your wedding dress after all the thought you have put into how you would look on your special day. Stressful does not begin to cover it. Crista Dettelis (@cristalina11), an entrepreneur, podcaster, and soon-to-be-bride, took to Instagram to share how her wedding dress was stolen. What made it worse was the fact that the dress she was supposed to wear was the same one her mother had worn when she married her father, 40 years ago.
Dettelis took to Instagram to share the devastating news about her dress and her grandmother’s 75-year-old headpiece, which was stolen as well. “Tell me why I was already planning the ‘something borrowed’ moment… and now I’m planning a crime documentary instead,” she wrote in the caption. Dettelis was supposed to wear her mother’s wedding dress for her legal ceremony in Vegas, before she flew out for her Greek wedding. After asking the front desk to check the cameras, she found out that the package her mother had sent her was stolen at around 1 a.m. in the morning from the mailroom. The suspect was an “older white male with salt and pepper hair.”

She asked the front desk to help her catch the thief but took matters into her own hands and left him a note on his car. However, the man denied it, and the front desk told her there was nothing they could do about her package now. This was not the first time parcels have been stolen from the building. After posting this story on Instagram, several strangers, local pawn shops, and vintage shops poured in with screenshots of a similar-looking dress, trying to help. Lawyers also reached out to advise Dettelis on what she should do next. But Dettelis’ “silver lining” was when David’s Bridal reached out.
David’s Bridal asked Dettelis to come into their store and pick out any wedding dress that she wanted for her wedding. Her mother also decided to fly in across the country so she could be present for her daughter. She called it her “Cinderella moment" and left the store not just with a dress but with shoes, a veil, a bag, and a custom piece.
As Crista said, she was not the first to have an item stolen out of the mailroom in her apartment building. This is actually a common problem for people living in apartments and condos in America, in comparison to people living in single-family homes. Security.org conducted a poll on 3,307 Americans in October 2025 regarding package theft. Just three months before the study, 9 million adults had had their packages stolen, and one in four Americans, or 64 million people, had experienced package theft.

Crista Dettelis has over 36.9k followers on Instagram and has received immense support and love for her posts and videos about the stolen wedding dress. The video where she took her mother to David's Bridal to get a new gown has received 21.7k views and more than 100 comments. @tonedbossedbae wrote, "Prayer works and God and love will always win! I’m so freaking happy for you! Love you! Most beautiful bride to be." @bebesssita_11 commented, "You deserve every blessing coming your way, that is amazing, so happy for you, [you] look stunning."
