True love remains unaffected by challenges. However, only a few months after Gillian (@yourmetastatiscbestie) was diagnosed with breast cancer, she realized she was living in a delusion of a happy marriage. After treatment for stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, when she returned to their marital home, she found her husband with another woman on the same bed she brought for her after the cancer diagnosis. On September 28, 2026, Gillian took to Instagram to share her heart-achingly painful divorce story, which has since amassed over 300,000 views.

A strange homecoming

Gillian described her experience from a point in time when she was grappling with the challenges that came with incurable breast cancer. When she returned to the house, she noticed that her husband had started a new family with a new woman and their two daughters. The bed she bought for her comfort was now being used for canoodling, and so was her bedside table. Everything Gillian had bought before was replaced with an exact-looking item. The white and golden curtains, for instance. “It's literally like I died, and they're just living with my stuff. Because he's just a sad man whose wife died from cancer, and he can't possibly get rid of her stuff,” she described sarcastically.

In sickness and health… maybe not

According to the American Cancer Society’s 2026 statistics, 321,910 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed among women, and 42,140 women will likely die from it. In total, there are more than 4 million breast cancer survivors in the US. This includes women still being treated and those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer in the past. While these women wrestle with the painful challenges that come with living with cancer, their partners often abandon them. For instance, Fred Hutch Cancer Center’s study found that the divorce rate of cancer patients is 11.6%. For females, the rate is about 7 times higher than for men.

Meanwhile, viewers not only empathized with Gillian, but also suggested uncanny ways to get back at her ex-husband. For example, @h.marie.1 suggested, “Girl, unscrew the end of the curtain rod and put a bunch of frozen shrimp inside the curtain rod. Screw the end back on and enjoy the fact that they will be hunting for the smell for a long time. Honestly, do it in every room.” @nothingdownabouthim said, “Mam. That man — he was never the person you thought he was. Grieve away, but know you were not the problem.” @maevybear said, "Oh my gosh, I can’t imagine how jarring and painful this must be! And how is she okay living with your things?! Big hugs, friend!"
