Boyfriend vanished on their Miami trip and his phone turned up at his 'old friend’s' bar — at 5 a.m., he returned saying, 'I got mugged'

He had told her before that he wanted to see a high-school friend who worked in a bar in Miami.

It's funny how cheaters make excuses to justify their betrayal. But one boyfriend definitely deserves an Academy Award for his Miami performance. Vanessa was on vacation with her boyfriend when her experience morphed into a suspense episode. At midnight, she located her boyfriend in another woman’s house. At about 5 in the morning, he turned up at her hotel room, fully drunk, and excused his absence by playing the victim of robbery. Vanessa knew he was lying, but his excuse just confirmed her fears. In an October 23, 2026, episode of the “Call Me Back” podcast, host Daniella (@daniellayourbff) read out her story, which has since been viewed over 3,000 times.

Just an old friend?

Vanessa and her friend went to Miami on a trip with her boyfriend. They had been dating for three to four months when she realized he had been checking out other girls all the time. Vanessa also found him following models on Instagram and liking their photos. She ignored his behavior until she realized that there was one woman, in particular, who he tried to flirt with the most. Her boyfriend used to comment on most of her pictures. When Vanessa confronted him, he dismissed her doubts, saying, “It’s not a big deal. We went to high school together. She’s just an old friend.” But the evidence indicated otherwise.

The sudden dissaperance

While planning the trip to Miami, Vanessa's boyfriend had mentioned that he wanted to visit a bar where this friend, named Brittany, worked. Then, while on the trip, her boyfriend suddenly vanished. Vanessa waited for him, but after an hour passed, her patience turned to panic. When she checked his location, it showed the same bar he mentioned wanting to go. After a 15-minute walk, Vanessa reached the bar, but her boyfriend was nowhere to be found. At this point, she started worrying and showing his pictures to people around.

Caught in the act

Worried, the staff started searching for him, and a bartender soon found his phone. Confused, Vanessa wore a detective’s hat and devised a crafty plot. She asked the bartender to tell Brittany that her friend had come to say hello. However, the staff member told Vanessa that Brittany had left her shift earlier that day. So she took Brittany’s address from him and rushed straight to Uber to catch her. At her house, the curtain was open, and through the window she could spot her boyfriend drinking wine with her in the kitchen. Without creating a scene, Venessa returned to her hotel and requested a new key card to the room.

This story might be shocking, but cheating isn't rare. When Spokeo surveyed 1,000 US adults, they found that more than two in five (44.3%) Americans have cheated on their partner. Surprisingly, the most common reason people gave for cheating was ‘I liked the attention’ (22.1%). Similarly, another 20.4% said they cheated because they thought their partners were also cheating on them. Social media has become a dominant catalyst for rekindling high-school romances, often leading to emotional or physical affairs during the midlife transition.

She chose herself

Meanwhile, about 5 in the morning, while Vanessa was asleep, her boyfriend came banging at the door. She looked through the peephole and asked what he wanted. He started playing the victim and told her that he got mugged. “I thought you were hanging out with Brittany,” she told him. For a few moments, there was just uncomfortable silence. Eventually, Vanessa did the expected. She broke up with him.
