'He just seemed eager to get rid of me and move on,' the woman said
Imagine rearranging your entire home, spending your hard-earned money, and opening your door to someone, only to have them pull the rug out from under you. That is exactly what happened to a 25-year-old woman (u/Olivia_Sofia) after two and a half years with her boyfriend. Just days after promising he wanted forever, he returned from a volunteer trip with a confession that he had fallen in love with someone else on the journey. This pushed the woman to a breaking point. She revealed what she did next to get back at him on Reddit on October 17, 2026, garnering over 2,500 upvotes.
The woman and her boyfriend agreed to move in after two and a half years together, but things derailed when the man abruptly ended the relationship. The very next day, however, he reversed the decision, claiming his mental health struggles had caused him to project doubts onto their partnership. He pleaded that breaking up had been the "biggest mistake of my life" and swore he wanted to be with her forever. Despite her initial hesitation, she chose to trust him. She spent substantial money rearranging her entire home to fit his needs. He left only a few little items behind before departing on a week-long volunteer trip, but he "hadn’t told his employer that he was going on this trip."

The minute the man returned, he announced that he had fallen in love with a woman he met on the trip, revealing that they had confessed their feelings, and immediately asked for his belongings. Left in shock by his total lack of empathy, she retreated to her mother's home to process the betrayal, while he acted as though their long-term bond was merely an inconvenience to discard. "He just seemed eager to get rid of me and move on," she noted.

The hostility escalated over the phone the following day. When the woman couldn't let him in because she was staying at her mother's, he lashed out in anger. The man admitted he was relieved it was over, confessing he had wanted to leave for months but only stayed because he feared being alone. He wanted to find a "backup" first. "He also told me that the new girl had a better body than me and that they’d already been talking a lot since the breakup," she said. But the final straw came the next day, when he arrived at the doorsteps to collect his belongings with his new girlfriend. The woman stood her ground, refusing to let the other woman enter her home.
Blindsided, humiliated, and disgusted by the man's lack of remorse, the woman decided to take matters into her own hands. She created a burner account and messaged his employer, attaching screenshots of his vacation photos to prove he had abused his sick leave. His workplace phoned him the next morning about the tip-off, though they opted not to pursue formal action since his contract was ending. The fallout soon reached their shared circle, leaving them divided over whether the woman went too far, but she stood her ground. "We’d just moved in together after he’d reassured me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me, only for him to leave me for someone else days later and treat me as though I meant nothing," she said.

As it turns out, a lot of Americans keep their backup options while being in a relationship. According to a Talker Research study, 16% of Americans in a committed relationship admitted to having a person they'd leave their current partner for if they showed romantic interest. Men are more likely to have a backup than women, with 19% of them admitting this compared to just 12% of women. Additionally, the study revealed that a whopping 20% of people believe that their current partner isn't their soulmate.

His new GF is in for an absolute treat." While u/EstimateCool3454 pointed out, "He planned this for weeks or even months. This guys is slime. Getting this guy out of your life is the best thing that could have happened to you. It doesn't matter what it cost. You are free now, and you can live the rest of your life."
