Growing up, most of us mimicked our favorite superheroes, hoping that one day we would get a chance to save a life. However, for a 9-year-old Michigan boy named Logan Vangemert, this became a reality. Just one day after watching a video that showed how to perform CPR, he got a chance to use his newly gained knowledge in real life. All of this went down after Logan headed to his local youth group at Radiant Church, where Tom and Beth Adriance were filling in as the group's leaders for that week, according to a video posted by ABC's '13 On Your Side' on March 28, 2026.

A sudden collapse

It was then, during the youth group proceedings, that Tom collapsed. He hit a chair on the way down and was bleeding from several places, as his face also hit the floor. As soon as Beth saw this, she immediately rushed to his aid. However, despite her efforts to speak to him, there was no comprehension in Tom's eyes. "There was blood dripping down from his forehead," Beth recalls. Still, somehow, she managed to roll Tom over, yet couldn't manage to get him to interact. But that was until Logan stepped in.

Logan, the 9-year-old boy, who looks even smaller than average kids his age, didn't seem like someone who could actually save Tom's life. However, when Beth gave up and put her hands in the air and stepped back, Logan took charge and performed CPR on Tom for nearly five minutes. Still, there were no signs of recovery. As the clock reached six minutes, the church's safety team arrived and used an AED on site to shock Tom's heart. Somehow, that finally worked, as Tom was then sent to the hospital.

There, he woke up nearly three and a half days later, thankfully with no brain damage. As it turns out, all of Tom's major arteries to his heart were blocked, and he was completely asymptomatic. Nonetheless, he finally got treated and is recovering now at the hospital. In the meantime, Tom's timely recovery has not only made little Logan's parents proud but also made him the youngest person to deliver CPR at the tender age of 9. But, unfortunately, there aren't many Logans around, as many people lose their lives due to a lack of proper CPR.

350,000 Americans suffer this annually

Each year in the United States alone, a staggering 350,000 people experience non-traumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. What's concerning is that nearly 90% of these patients die. Additionally, survival chances are decreased by 10% every minute that CPR and AEDs are used, according to the American Red Cross. Despite this being so effective, only about 41.7% of people receive bystander CPR. Meanwhile, only 12.6% got an AED applied. So, it goes without saying that almost everyone needs to learn how to give CPR, as it could help save so many lives.

Moreover, this also explains why people under the comment section of a Facebook post about Logan's heroics were stunned. Joel Welch said, "That will influence that young man's life. I wish I could see him in 20 yrs." Meanwhile, Samantha Marie Ulrich revealed, "As a nurse that does CPR on a fairly regular basis (I work in the cardiac cath lab, people who help people like the man featured in the story), I have to say I was so incredibly proud of how brave Logan was in that moment when Tom needed him most. He absolutely is the reason why Tom is here with us today!! Great job, Logan!!! You are a hero, kiddo!"
