The employee asked for a day off as soon as the appointment was scheduled. Despite explaining the importance, the employer refused her the time off.
It is hard to imagine how unbelievably ruthless some employers can be to their workers. An employee, who goes by u/Livid_Beautiful1067 on Reddit, shared her experience of how her manager heartlessly denied her leave to go for a doctor’s appointment. The employee shared screenshots of the conversation between her and her manager where she constantly tried to explain the dire need for the day off but the employer couldn’t care less and refused to grant the leave.
People rallied around the employee for calling out the manager’s careless approach. “Can’t go to my doctor’s appointment. There's so much more context than this but I'm unbelievably pissed,” the woman wrote. The screenshot showed that she had confronted her boss about her canceled request, “Just saw my time off request for Friday was denied. I have a doctor’s appointment at 9 am in Bentonville that I can’t reschedule.” The employee further tried to explain that she applied for the leave as soon as she got her appointment, which was last minute due to busy bookings. “I can’t reschedule it or I’m looking at 8 months of waiting again,” she added. The employer wouldn’t put their foot down and said there was nothing to be done.
“The request was submitted as your sister’s birthday. If there was a little more communication on the severity, I might have been able to adjust but at this point, schedule something next week, I’m sorry,” the employer said. The employee acknowledged the same and explained that it was indeed her sister’s birthday as mentioned on their portal and that she adjusted the appointment at the last minute. She also added that though it would be a long drive, she would attend the appointment and then see her sister, as well. The employer wasn’t interested in listening to what she had to say and was adamant about the refusal.
“The schedule is set for next week. If you can find a cover from the other manager, it's great. But if not, you are scheduled and are expected to show up,” the employer said. People were beyond enraged at the employer's rude behavior. u/SuckerforNoirRobots said, “Something happened with American work culture a long time ago where the companies stopped giving a f**k about employees but the employees didn't seem to get the memo about no longer providing loyalty. These businesses seem to think that they're run by Kings and we should all be tripping over ourselves to work for them.”
u/blatantmutant shared their experience saying, “Management denied me reasonable accommodations to manage my diabetes and wondered why I was pissed when I was having highs and lows when working with customers.” u/Meeeeee01 said, “I cannot understand how the ‘why’ matters. I am telling you I will not be here.” u/GothMaams remarked, “I'm so sick of these employers thinking they can dictate the courses of our lives and then wonder why they have such high turnover.”
