Described as an 'arrogant and condescending' person, neither the author nor his fiancée liked him.

Medical emergencies are sometimes self-explanatory; however, some bosses implement last-minute rules that annoy employees — especially when it's done to specifically inconvenience them. When a boss implemented a new rule forcing an employee to produce an impromptu medical certificate for calling in sick, her fiancé decided to make him regret it and later posted the tale to Reddit on November 5.

u/sss133 on Reddit shared that they run a physical therapy clinic while his fiancée is a lawyer. During their engagement party, the author offered discounts to his fiancée’s colleagues who were interested in visiting his clinic. Ever since the offer, he has been receiving four regulars from her office, and one of his fiancée's partners had booked an appointment. Described as an "arrogant and condescending" person, neither the author nor his fiancée liked him. "He's very arrogant and condescending but strangely desperate for approval. I remained pleasant with him, though. After paying, he did mention the discount, but I just said well it's for employees, with a smirk," the author wrote.

During one of this man's visits, the author was occupied with other clients because one of his staff members was out sick. So, the man casually asked if the staff member needed a medical certificate, to which the author responded, "I just said no, and I think that’s a stupid policy as I'd rather someone stay home and not infect the clinic." However, the man noted that he wanted to be strict with his office to prevent people from taking unnecessary leave. Unfortunately, the author was struck with a cold later, which eventually got passed on to his fiancée. She decided to work from home on Friday, but when she texted her boss, he suddenly instructed her to produce a medical certificate. That was a completely new policy, and wasn't a common ask in her office — that is, before this moment.

The author, who wanted to put the boss in his place, noticed that her boss had an appointment with him at 2 p.m. He immediately booked his fiancée in with her doctor at 2 p.m. and told her boss he'd have to cancel his appointment to drive his fiancée to the doctor. "I'd get back to him if I had any availability, but I'm fully booked for the next 3 weeks," he wrote, adding, "He's messaged both of us saying that the medical isn't necessary." One might wonder why people continue being cruel even though the concept of 'consequences' exists. In a 2011 study by Kariann Krohne and Liv Heide Magnussen, it was noted that attendance while ill was strongly influenced by job importance, work culture, peer pressure, and organizational expectations. Employees don't respond well to disrespect — much like human beings in general.

By implementing last-minute rules, the boss had tried to create a hindrance for his employee while she was actively sick. Soon after the post went viral, many users expressed their thoughts on the issue. u/awgeezwhatnow wrote, "Ah, I love it when people get to live the day they deserve!" u/Beckella commented, "It’s all rules and principles until it affects him." u/theunpoet shared, "One of the funnier ones. Had me cracking up."
