One of the most annoying parts of service providers is how they feel entitled to receive a hefty tip despite offering a bad service. Restaurant customers often face a dilemma of how much tip they should leave and some people leave an outright zero tip for bad service. A 30-year-old woman u/IndependentFar8420 on Reddit also did the same when she experienced racism at a restaurant. Recently, the woman and her mom went to meet her boyfriend's mom for the first time at a restaurant. Since she and her mom were Black, the waitress seemed to turn a cold shoulder when they arrived and soon faced the consequences for it.

Being naturally punctual, the 30-year-old and her mom arrived early at the restaurant. For over 20 minutes, the waitress didn't even get to their table though the restaurant was quite empty. "Right away I could tell that she didn't want to wait on us. She didn't greet us with a 'hello,' she just asked what we wanted to drink," the woman explained. The waitress didn't note their order down and took her own sweet time to bring their drinks. But the drinks were wrong too. "My mom pointed out that she didn't order a Pepsi and the waitress rolled her eyes, took my mother's glass and disappeared," she added. When the woman went to inquire the hostess about where the bathroom was, she also heard her waitress making racist comments about her and her mom.

"She was pissed that she had to wait on a 'Black table' because 'they never tip well.' My mother and I were the only Black people in the restaurant. She wasn't even whispering when she said it either," the woman pointed out. Pretending not to hear this comment, the woman asked the hostess where the bathroom was. When she returned from the bathroom, her boyfriend and his mom had arrived. Just then, the woman noticed a drastic change in the waitress' service. "My boyfriend and his mother are white. When my waitress saw the rest of our party, she did a 180. Her service was stellar. She took notes, said jokes and our water glasses were always filled. She didn't make another mistake," she explained.

When it was time for the bill, the woman typed in 0% in the place of tips. The waitress noticed the zero tip only after the receipt was printed and stopped the 30-year-old as she was about to leave. "She asked if there was a problem with her service, and I said her service was fantastic, but since I was a Black woman, I don't tip well," the woman said. The waitress was speechless and laughed it off nervously. When the boyfriend's mom heard about this, she was pissed because she used to be a waitress. "My boyfriend's mom said that I should've tipped her anyway because it shows character," the woman noted. "My boyfriend and my mom are both on my side, but I'm wondering if I should've just thrown in a $2 tip," she added seeking the internet's help.

However, the internet reassured the woman that she was right not to tip the racist waitress. "I worked as a server for six years and I would absolutely not expect a tip for behaving like this to customers. She probably does not make much in tips and this industry isn’t for her. It’s so inappropriate to ask people why they didn’t tip you, this is so embarrassing," said u/ellaf21. "I definitely wouldn’t have tipped after that. Even the waitress knew it was bad when she asked why and you told her the reason," chimed in u/Lmaooowit. "You pulled a discreet, classy power move on that racist, mate. I think you did it perfectly. What is your boyfriend's mother thinking trying to lecture you about it?" added u/Top_Airport6285.
