Matas couldn't understand his behavior change until he confessed to cheating on her

After a serious heartbreak, Toronto-based woman Claudia Matas (@polishlaurapalmer) downloaded Hinge, expecting a quick distraction, but she met Carter instead. Well, the duo matched on the dating app and immediately fell for each other. In fact, Carter soon wished to make things exclusive, and Matas agreed, excited to start a new life with him. However, everything changed, as he started arguing with her over trivial issues. Carter even accused Matas of wanting him to foot the bill. She couldn't understand his sudden behavior change until he confessed to having cheated on her just before bringing up the monogamy topic on the table. On September 24, 2026, Matas detailed her story in a two-part TikTok series, and her videos have received over 500,800 views.
Matas mentioned that before meeting Carter, she was in a serious relationship with a male best friend. However, he did something she couldn't forgive, and she ended their relationship. Frustrated, Matas downloaded Hinge, which is where she met Carter. Soon she hooked up with him and suggested meeting up for drinks. The first date was “lovely and charming,” as Matas described. A day later, the couple hung out again. Their relationship progressed pretty quickly. Matas explained that she liked Carter as a man, and she wasn't specifically attracted to him because of his money or career.

Then the other day, after her boyfriend returned from a family friend’s wedding, he initiated a conversation on monogamy. He told Matas that he was seeing no one else except her, and she replied the same. The couple finally decided to be exclusive. However, things quickly took an unexpected turn soon after. The couple started fighting over trivial issues. Once, when Matas had a panic attack, Carter made a remark that made her feel like a burden to him. Everything she said stirred a defensive reaction from him, as if she were trying to frame him for something. Another time, when Matas wanted oysters, he blamed her for wanting to spend on her.
Matas was already exhausted with Carter's behavior, but the last straw came when he texted her on a seven-hour train ride from Montreal. He told her he wasn’t ready for a long-term relationship. Matas even asked him to think before reaching any conclusion, but Carter accused her of suppressing his emotions instead. "He just kept being like, 'Why can't I express my opinions to you?' It just always feels like you're stifling me,'" she recalled. One moment, he would express his intention to break up with her; the next moment, he would shower her with flattering compliments.

Matas was constantly in hypervigilant mode, unable to settle her mind on one thought about their relationship. Things escalated when Carter cited her inability to have a physical relationship as a reason for wanting to break up. Matas was devastated hearing him, because he already knew about her medical condition. He even tried to blame her for the breakup, saying they're not compatible because she didn't want to have kids. Matas couldn't understand his sudden behavior change until Carter finally confessed to cheating on her on two different occasions in Montreal. She was shocked, especially because he talked about making things exclusive just after cheating on her.
A survey (by GlobalWebIndex) cited by CheatScanX found that around 30% of dating app users are in committed relationships while maintaining active profiles. Though it isn't clear if Carter is one of them, his infidelity was especially surprising because he expressed his desire to be exclusive with Matas soon after cheating on her.

Meanwhile, reacting to Matas' videos, @lillianeadams328 commented, “Someone once said don’t tell them your past dating horrors because it’s like they think it’s okay to hurt you. Now I tell them my exes treated me like a princess.” @luluverica said, “This type of man gets mad at you for having any normal emotions/expectations and then flips it on you.”
