'A long-term relationship is about sacrifices... and that's okay...' the girlfriend said, defending her partner

How would you feel if your partner paid extra for a flight seat just to be away from you? Terrible, right? But that's precisely what Nicole Vawter's loving boyfriend did, on a flight from California to New York City. Vawter and her boyfriend had flown to California to meet her parents. They traveled together, but on their return flight, while Vawter chose a regular seat in economy class, her partner opted for business class. She (@nicmarievee on TikTok) shared the video on April 14, which has since gone viral with 6.5 million views, and everyone said the same thing.
"Do you have anything to say for yourself?" the girlfriend asked in the video, taking a friendly jab at her boyfriend, who responded with, "I love you," and chuckled. Taking the joke to the next level, Vawter asked, "Does anyone have a dog house? My boyfriend booked himself in first class while I'm back in economy plus." To her surprise, people were not pleased with the boyfriend's behavior.
Upset by online hatred, Vawter posted another video, defending her partner. She explained that her boyfriend in finance had to go to work at 8 AM after the overnight flight, while she could sleep in more and show up late. In fact, her boyfriend had to travel for another business trip the same night... So, I will give him the benefit of the doubt," Vawter confessed. She basically wanted to convey that since her partner had no time to rest after the red-eye flight, it was only fair that he took a nap in the business class.
Vawter also explained that since she works for herself, she could afford to rest a bit before showing up to work, which was just impossible for her partner, working a high-demand finance job. "I don't necessarily need us to spend $2k on a ticket for me to sit first class, because I would rather spend that $2k on going toward the wedding hack — maybe I want a new purse or some Chanel shoes or put it in stocks..." she clarified.
Many people may view 'sacrifice' or 'compromise' as a negative aspect of a relationship, but a YouGov survey found it's one of the most important keys to a successful relationship. The online poll of 2,167 U.S. adult citizens found that 71% of respondents believe that compromise is necessary to make a relationship work. Interestingly, the survey also observed that younger Americans (ages 18 to 44) are less likely to support compromise in a relationship, compared to older people (63% vs. 78%). Now, what Vawter did for her boyfriend was more of an adjustment than a sacrifice.
In fact, when someone pointed out that Vawter's boyfriend prioritized his comfort over hers, she posted another video explaining how a relationship cannot always be 50/50. "Sometimes somebody needs to be the 25% in the relationship, and the other partner has to step up and be the 75%. A long-term relationship is about sacrifices... and that's okay," she added.

While some viewers sided with her, most were not convinced. @muhadestroyer commented, "It is what he thinks you deserve vs. what he thinks he deserves." Similarly, @sheawestre_ wrote, "My boyfriend got upgraded once, and I didn't, and he gave me his first-class seat — don’t settle." @buff.barbie_ shared, "I would never be able to let this go. This is such a deep level of disrespect and inconsideration."
