Sometimes couples break up over the silliest reasons, but Elana Schmidt (@eeelahnah), a fitness trainer's ex-boyfriend, may have set a new record. Well, she and her former partner had been together for seven years. However, problems arose when Schmidt decided to get into the fitness industry. She joined a women-only gym and started to follow female fitness freaks on social media. Instead of supporting her, her ex-boyfriend saw it as a threat. On July 23, 2026, Schmidt recalled her last conversation with him and how it changed her perception about love and romance. The video has received 6,96,000 views on her Instagram.

The breakup excuse

Elana Schmidt confessed that she was crying hysterically when her partner broke up with her. She said she was not ready to let him go, but then he told her something so unbelievable that she instantly laughed in disbelief. While Schmidt was bawling her eyes out, her ex-boyfriend said, "Elana, I say this with genuine sincerity: I think you'd be a lot happier if you were with a woman." She was stunned by what just came out of his mouth but wanted to end things on a civil note. So, she listened when he explained why he felt that way. Her ex blamed her for being so "women-focused" lately and pointed out she had just joined a women-only gym to justify his reasoning. Moreover, he also told her to "Look at who you follow," referring to all the female fitness influencers. As it turns out, he was jealous of the women in her life.

A fresh start

Schmidt could not wrap her head around her ex-boyfriend's reason. All she wanted to do was enter the fitness industry as a trainer and weightlifter. She said, "I didn't know that following Kelly Matthews would suddenly result in the idea that a man could never meet me where I'm at emotionally. But apparently, it did." Schmidt ended her little story time by reminding all the women to hold their girlfriends closer than ever because men would say anything in the end.

On August 15, Schmidt returned to Instagram to share an update on her personal life. She explained that she and her ex-boyfriend have been in no-contact since their breakup. Schmidt also confessed that she'd been single since then. "I love the idea that I’m heading into my 30s a single woman and feel so incredibly lucky I don’t have to think about anyone else. Maybe when I’m 33, I’ll get back out there," she wrote in the caption.

Women-only for a reason

Choosing to be surrounded by women does not automatically mean someone is romantically interested in them. In fact, a lot of women prefer to train in ''women-only'' gyms because 56.37% of female gym goers experienced some harassment at the gym, as revealed by RunRepeat in a 2021 survey. Furthermore, 25.65% of the women have completely switched gyms or stopped going to the gym because of it. Meanwhile, another 28.68% reported feeling unsafe, and 20.19% thought twice before wearing a certain outfit to the gym. Schmidt's boyfriend did not understand or even think of asking these questions before accusing her of being interested in women.

Meanwhile, netizens called out Schmidt's boyfriend for trying to put the entire blame for the breakup on her. For instance, @the_fynethyme commented, "He was absolutely trying to put as much blame in the situation on you! Classic move unfortunately, very disappointing especially when a break up is an already distressing situation." Similarly, @cchaseno wrote, "Very similar thing has been said to me by a man and was not welcome. Feel you! Wish you the best."
