The matter of who should pay on a date has recently become extremely tricky. Different people have various opinions on who should foot the bill. 18-year-old u/mmaddyspov just got a new job, and her 23-year-old boyfriend invited her for dinner to celebrate. Things were going well until the bill came. He asked if they could split the bill. Even though she was surprised, she did not make a fuss about it until she found out what he had said behind her back. The post was shared on June 30, and it received 2,700 upvotes and 1,300 comments.

'A real paycheck'

The author found out from her boyfriend's friend that he had made a joke about her before she arrived. The friend accidentally mentioned that her boyfriend said that since she has "a real paycheck now," he does not have to pay for her anymore. She confronted him about it, and he brushed it off as a silly joke. However, he admitted that it was the reason why he asked to split the bill.

The author felt that the joke was laced with some truth. She paid for her half of the meal, but also called him out on his "joke." I told him I wasn't interested in going on dates with someone who invited me out just to make a point," she noted. Their mutual friends said she was taking it too personally, while the boyfriend told her that she made him look "cheap" in front of their friends.

The debate over who should pay

A 2017 YouGov poll revealed how American adults actually feel about who should pay on a first date. Although the majority of men (40%) believed they should pay for the first date, that is not true for women. 37% of the women think the person who initiated the date should pay, whether it is a man or a woman. Additionally, 37% of men are neutral and would not be offended if asked to pay on the first date. 25% of women share the same sentiment.

However, another 25% of women expressed that they would be offended if asked to split the bill on a first date. Even though the author and her boyfriend were having a celebratory dinner, and not a first date, she was surprised he asked her to split because he was the one who invited her.

Did not sound like a 'celebration'

People thought that the boyfriend's 'joke' was unnecessary and childish. They commended the author for standing up for herself and not just taking it as a joke. u/NoDanaOnlyZuuI wrote, "I f*cking love seeing young women advocate for themselves and take no sh*t. It takes most people years to learn that lesson. Good for you for walking away. Never let anyone convince you to settle for less. NOR." u/Jrm12334 added, "NOR. He sounds like a boy whose frontal cortex is still far from developing despite the age difference. I’d be willing to bet you could find someone who wanted to genuinely celebrate your milestones without trying to embarrass you."
