A woman’s (u/ineyks) mind was spun into a shaky dissonance when her boyfriend got upset after she made him a delicious dinner. She explained that her boyfriend had been covering their dates, so she decided to make him feel special by cooking him dinner. What started as a beautiful evening turned sour when he accused her of flirting with his roommate only because she gave him a plate too. The post, shared on August 25, 2026, has received 15,000 upvotes on Reddit.

The shocking accusation

It hadn’t been too long since the couple had started dating. The author's boyfriend seemed generous and responsible. Every time they went out, he paid the bills. On one occasion, the woman offered to visit his house and cook dinner for him to make him feel special. When she entered his house, she saw her boyfriend's roommate. "I began to cook for all of us — me, my boyfriend, and his roommate," the author recalled.

Everything was going well until she served the meal. Her boyfriend’s roommate thanked her for the meal, and all of a sudden, the boyfriend gave her a vicious look in the eye, which left her perplexed. The man insisted they go to the room and talk in private. The author agreed, and later, she realized her boyfriend was mad at her for cooking for his roommate. "He said that it was disrespectful and came off as me trying to flirt with him," she added. Ever since that episode, the woman said he has been giving her the cold shoulder. "I know that I have to break things off. I just hate how there were no red flags until this point. I thought he could have been the one,” she lamented in a comment

Insecure men

No one knows where this boogeyman of insecurity comes from, but studies show that it has possessed a majority of them. For instance, according to New Men’s Heads and Hearts report from Relate, more than half (60%) of men feel insecure in dating relationships. Among factors like age, fear of rejection, and appearance, one of the primary factors behind insecurity is past experiences (19%).

From a scientific perspective, the boyfriend's reaction could be because of the belief that men and women can’t just be friends, which is entrenched in the human psyche. In a study published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, researchers noted that while men and women “can be just friends,” the opportunity for romance is always lurking just around the corner, waiting to strike in the most inopportune moment.

‘He's an insecure loser'

Reddit readers said the woman doesn't deserve to be with a partner who's so insecure. Most of them urged her to take the experience as a life lesson and move on. For instance, u/knitterc commented, “A good partner would be saying ‘Wow, thanks babe, that was really considerate of you to include my roommate.’ And nothing less. This ain't the one.” u/Ritaredditonce said, “Consider your couple of months together as a learning experience and move on from this loser.”
