Ben Affleck didn't hesitate to let his son know that money doesn't grow on trees.
Ben Affleck might be a multi-millionaire and an Oscar-winning actor, but when it comes to parenting, he’s not handing out Dior sneakers without a lesson attached. During a red carpet interview at SXSW for "The Accountant 2," Affleck opened up about a conversation with his 13-year-old son, Samuel, after the teen expressed interest in a pair of Dior Air Force 1s that cost $6000. In the original video uploaded on Instagram by @gotsole, Samuel can be seen checking out the shoes, and Affleck recalled telling him, "That's a lot of lawns you gotta mow there. You just like those because they're expensive." Affleck, speaking with Access Hollywood, responded when the interviewer asked him, "Did your son start mowing the lawns for those sneakers?"
Affleck then laughed about his son’s comeback and gave more context to their conversation. "That's what happens when you tell a m********* they have to mow a lawn. All of a sudden, they don't want those shoes." He asked the interviewer, "Do you have any kids? Do you have a 13-year-old? There's always some grift. I'm like, 'Man, you do not need $6,000 shoes.' He's like, 'We have the money,' I'm like, 'I have the money, you're broke!'" The clip of the exchange went viral and was shared across various social media platforms, including TikTok, via Access Hollywood's page @accesshollywood. Many applauded Affleck's approach to teaching his son the value of money.
@liftingonaprayer wrote, "'I have the money, you’re broke.' That’s how you raise grounded kids in a millionaire household." @gokamalago said, "The way he stops and asks her if she has kids was so kind and human. He connected her with his story, and that was what made it super charming." @herandsoforth commented, "Cuz, low-key, even if you have all the money in the world, $6k shoes are insane, lol." @jennyherrera228 quipped, "I come from an upper-middle-class family. This was my dad, he would remind us daily that we broke. He’s the one with money, lol. Worked at Joann’s fabrics at 15 and haven’t stopped. These are the best life lessons." @lkra515 joked, "I tell my 13-year-old, 'The bank is closed. It won't open again until you're out of the house.'"
He is not the only actor who’s made headlines for refusing to raise entitled kids. In another story, Shaquille O’Neal, whose net worth exceeds $400 million, has expressed a similar stance when it comes to his children and money. In an episode of the "Earn Your Leisure" podcast, the NBA legend explained how he makes it clear to his six kids that while he may be rich, that wealth isn’t automatically theirs.
"We ain't rich. I'm rich," O’Neal said. He added that his kids aren’t always thrilled to hear it, but he’s upfront about the expectations. He explained, "You gotta have bachelor's or master's [degrees], and then if you want me to invest in one of your companies, you're going to have to present it, boom boom boom, bring it to me. I'll let you know, I'm not giving you nothing." While he’s firm, O’Neal has admitted that he does have a softer spot when it comes to his daughters. He said, "There's one rule: education. I don't care if you play basketball. I don't care about none of that," he said.
