We don't often recognize how even a tiny act of kindness can uplift someone far more than we ever imagine. Jesse Cole, the founder of Banana Ball, a Savannah-based exhibition baseball league, experienced just that when a 23-year-old intern, Berry Aldridge, surprised a grieving family with an unforgettable experience at the game. In conversation with Simon Sinek (@simonsinek), the former baseball player opened up about how the young boy helped a widower fulfill his wife's final wish for their seven kids. The full interview was released on April 14, and it has received 13,000 views on YouTube.

The 'last' wish

In the initial years, Banana Ball called every single fan who bought a ticket and thanked them personally. In fact, Cole confirmed that it continued for seven years, until they gathered almost 150,000 fans. During the same time, the company had a 23-year-old intern named Aldridge, who once called a family who had bought 9 tickets for an upcoming game. The first time he dialed them, the call went unanswered, but the next day, the father answered the phone and informed Aldridge about a tragic death in the family.

"I am so sorry. You know, we have seven kids, and we are not going to be able to go to the game. My wife just tragically passed away," Cole recalled. Heavy-hearted, Aldridge informed Cole and discussed whether they could do anything for the family. The intern called back, mourning dad, and asked if he could bring his kids to the game. Thankfully, he agreed, and Aldridge helped the family have an unforgettable experience.

The jersey number that broke him

Aldridge made sure the family got the front row seats, and the players spent time with them. Moreover, the team surprised the grieving dad with a Bananas jersey with the number 27 on the back, showing the number of years he was married to his wife. "They stayed till the end of the game, and the dad said to Berry, 'That was the last gift my wife gave our kids. I could never imagine a better gift,'" Cole recalled.

56% of adults have helped a stranger

Aldridge went above and beyond to help a father mourning the loss of his dear wife, but do people really take the effort to help others? A 2024 Gallup report revealed that more than half (56%) of adults worldwide had helped a stranger in the last month. But the report suggests declining empathy, as it observed a 6% drop from 2023. "Reports of financial donations and volunteerism also decreased, with 33% of people saying they gave money (down four points) and 26% contributing their time (also down four points)," it added.

Meanwhile, reacting to the heartfelt story, @ultraeventer commented, "I love the full circle moments — how one decision can completely change the course of your future and positively impact that of others. The best part is that it occurs when we are truly selfless and doing it because 'it just feels right.'" Similarly, @h__degree said, "Incredible. It is amazing when you have a deep level of understanding why you do things. Seeing people as people — not a green bill. So awesome! I love this about Berry!"
