For some people, a birthday cake is the highlight of their special day. Chelsi Kern (@chelsikerrn) had been ordering her husband Matthew Bennett's cake from Carvel for a few years. She always opted for the "Fudgie the Whale Cake." This year, Kern and their friends thought of a hilarious message to put on the cake. But when Bennett saw his birthday cake, he was confused. Seconds later, the message cracked him up. Kern shared a photo of the cake on their Threads account on October 4, 2026. It has had over 57,800 likes, 2,400 comments, and 540 reshares.

One-word request

Kern explained, "It's been like a running joke amongst us and our friends to just write something completely ridiculous on a cake." This year, they wanted to write "Run" in capital letters on Bennett's cake. "This year, we were gonna do a more ominous one, so that’s where the 'run' came from," Kern explained. They just thought it was funny. While they ordered the cake, Kern wrote the instruction to Carvel, "RUN (BIG, all caps, creepy if possible) Pink Inscription."

Carvel's awkward moment

Kern's best friend went to pick up the cake. When she saw it, she had to send a photo to Kern to confirm she got the right cake. In an interview with PEOPLE, Kern recalled what her friend said: "Dude, is this what it was supposed to be?" Instead of the one-word "RUN," Carvel inscribed the entire instruction onto the cake. To top it off, they missed the second parenthesis; the first parenthesis looked like a "C," and they misspelled "possible" as "possiple." The main instruction to keep the word in "all caps" was overlooked.

"It was so wrong. It was so funny," Kern said. When she saw it, she literally collapsed. "I thought it was hilarious and so much better than I ever could have hoped for. It was silly and ridiculous, and it cracked all of us up." Bennett was initially confused when he saw his cake, but when she showed him the receipt with the instruction, "he was just dying." Carvel also responded to Kern's post. They commented, "Well this is awkward." But in a later statement, they cleared the air and wrote, "We’ve reached out to Chelsi in hopes we can get a second chance at delivering a cake that makes the next occasion even sweeter."

Sharing jokes

Thankfully, Kern and Bennett responded to the error with humor. A 2024 Knot survey found that respondents said "sense of humor" was an important quality they look for in a partner. Kern told PEOPLE, "It’s very much our kind of humor." She also said, "My husband is my best friend and the funniest person I know, and I’m glad that we just get to share some of this joy with everybody else."

Carvel made it 'possiple'

Readers shared their own hilarious cake blunders in the comment section. @sunflowerrhoneyy_ commented, "I told a guy at the bakery, Please write, 'Finally 18 but still a pain in the a**.' He laughed, said he loved it, and asked if I wanted the '18' spelled out or just numbers. I said, 'No numbers.' He wrote '18' on the cake. That was it." @who.let.the.dodds.out wrote, "'Possiple' is killing me."
