People on the autism spectrum have several difficulties doing everyday tasks, unlike neurotypicals. They often have to plan ahead and take care of their safety and their caregivers have to account for everything that could go wrong. However, every small achievement is an accomplishment even if it means going to the barbershop alone for the first time. A mother, Selina, recently posted a heartwarming video of her autistic son going to the barbershop for the first time.

The video posted on TikTok has gathered over 2.3 million views from people commending the young man's efforts to live independently. The video starts with Joshua telling his mother that he wants to go to the barbershop. The mother hands him two 5-pound bills ($12) and gives him permission to go ahead. Joshua heads outside wearing a black jacket and holding the money in his hands. His mother reminds him, "You need to put the money in your pocket so that you don't lose it." He immediately puts the money safely in his pocket.

The video moves forward to Joshua coming back from his haircut and it looks absolutely great on him. This seems like a small thing for anyone who is neurotypical but for an individual with autism, it is a great task that boosts a sense of independence and confidence for them. TikTok users congratulated Joshua for getting a haircut on his own in the comments section. A user commented, "Seeing autistic young people be independent gives me so much hope for my younger brother." Another added, "I have an autistic son.  He's only 15 but he couldn't do this he has no sense of danger. This has made me smile that this young man managed to go there and back without any problems."

A third user commented, "I’ve seen the way Nigerian mums care for their children with special needs, it’s fascinating to me because they raise them to be so independent." Another commented, "Heartwarming. Love the bit when you tell him to put the money in his pocket. Proud mum moment." Selina posts several videos of Joshua trying to live as independently as possible. He can be seen doing his chores, going shopping, making breakfast and going to church. All of these videos are heartwarming and show that autistic people can live their life in the most fulfilling way with good care and assistance.

In another heartwarming video, a mother recorded her 4-year-old son autistic son calling her "mama" for the first time. The mother of the kid has a surprised expression on her face as her son repeatedly calls her "mama." When she asked him, "Where is mommy?" he touched her on the shoulder. She is crying as she urges her son to repeat it again and again. Many Reddit users were moved to tears by this sweet and emotional event, and many turned to the comments to express their gratitude.

It is extremely rewarding for caregivers to see their children with special needs accomplish the smallest of feats.
