'I noticed a couple rowing on the lake... Decided to help a brother out'
On a grey evening blanketed by clouds, with winds blowing rapidly, a man in a crimson sweater was having brunch with his family when he saw a pair rowing on the lake across the restaurant, and decided to do something adventurous. In a video posted by John Englezos on his Instagram, he stood up, rushed to the handrail, and sang ‘Kiss the Girl’ loud enough for the obscure couple to hear, which led them to their alleged "first kiss."
Englezos is a writer and a spoken word poet from Melbourne, Australia. His work is surrounded by themes of hope, identity, and wonder, which clearly translates into his real-life personality as well. Two weeks post-Valentine’s Day, he witnessed this couple on a family trip, not too far from where he was seated. “I noticed a couple rowing on the lake... Decided to help a brother out,” he captioned the video. If sight serves as proof, then it looks like he did end up helping a brother out after all, as the couple promptly took to his soulful singing.
Engelos sang the lyrics of 'Kiss the Girl' by Samuel E. Wright, “There you see her. Sitting there across the way. She don't got a lot to say. But there's something about her. And you don't know why. But you're dying to try. You wanna kiss the girl," in the video. The song ended with a lot of cheering and applauding from the audience, who were none other than John’s family. Then the video panned towards the couple who were sitting in a boat.
A survey posted by The NewYork Times, conducted by OnePoll, says that Americans love talking to strangers more on vacation than at home. 77 % of the participants believed that they would happily indulge in an interesting conversation with a stranger than on a normal day-to-day life. And, 66% said they enjoyed being congratulated by strangers on special occasions. The research indicates excitement about developing new connections, which is what John did. The couple was moved by his song and kissed as the text overlay on the video read, “Success.” Dana Studebaker, vice president of marketing of consumer brands at Apple Leisure Group Vacations, said, “A vacation is a way to try new experiences and build new memories."
"And that’s why we’re seeing people express an interest in traveling to celebrate those meaningful moments and milestones. It’s a way to extend that moment and make it extra memorable," Studebaker commented. People were moved by this kind yet hilarious video, "I don’t know this man but the way he made his way through and was down to sing this song to strangers, makes him my instant friend," said @handcraftedfabulously. "Adorable John — Wish the world was filled with people like you!!," commented @midnightstrikesbabe. "The fact that he pushed his way through in order to deliver this beautiful message," wrote @bianca.moniquee. "A man who enjoys whimsy AND knows The Little Mermaid lyrics 12/10 immaculate vibes," @ldbroccoli chimed in.
