Koch realized the true meaning of a 'crew' after spending 10 days going around the moon

Astronaut Christina Koch witnessed Earth floating alone in a vast ocean of darkness during her time in space, and the sight led to a realization she hadn’t fully understood before. A day after the Artemis II crew made their splashdown, she spoke about that moment during a press conference at Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base in Houston on April 11, where she reflected on how seeing the planet from that distance changed the way she thought about humanity and teamwork. A video of Christina Koch's speech was shared by Astrosapientes (@astrosapientes) on Instagram and by WRAL on YouTube on April 12.
Years ago, Koch had delivered several speeches on what it means to be a crew; however, she recently admitted to a different take after the Artemis II mission: "The last 10 days, I've gotten a little bit of a better answer on that question." Koch took a deep breath before explaining, "A crew is people, or you know, a group that is in it, all the time, no matter what, that is stroking together, every minute, with the same purpose."
She looks around at her three crewmates, Reid, Jeremy, and Victor, as she continues, "[A team] that is willing to sacrifice silently for each other, that gives grace, that holds accountable." Fully facing them now, with her back towards the audience, Koch says, voice shaky with emotion, "A crew has the same cares, and the same needs, and a crew is inescapably, beautifully, dutifully, linked."
Koch also shared her first thoughts upon seeing "Tiny Earth" from space. "What struck me wasn't just Earth. It was all the blackness around it," she said. She then said something that will be etched into history forever: "Earth was just this lifeboat, hanging, undisturbingly, in the universe." With a shaky breath, she continued, "I may not have learned, I know I haven't learned everything that this journey has yet to teach me. But there's one new thing I know, and that is, Planet Earth, you are a crew."

Teamwork is a skill that is required not only by astronauts but by anyone who is working towards a shared goal. It is a life skill that can be used by everyone, from young children to adults. According to a Team Stage survey, 75% of the staff said that teamwork and collaboration are essential for corporate success. The survey also revealed that 50% of the employees stayed at a company because they felt that they were part of a team.

People were flooding the comment section with words of appreciation for the only female astronaut on the Artemis II crew. @anna.masciarelli wrote, "They sent four astronauts to discover more of the universe, and four human beings returned who found the wonders of the universe within themselves. The best part of this mission is the humanity, joy, love, and respect that four extraordinary beings managed to experience, build, and discover in those ten days. They move us and remind us how wonderful it is to be part of this 'crew' called planet Earth. God bless them!"
@liberty7777 added, "Perfect. I think your mission coming at this time in history is perfect timing. All of you are sending the message that this tiny planet we are all on really is our only lifeboat. Please keep speaking out — the world needs to hear this message!"
