A content creator revealed how her perception of 'Americans being lazy' drastically changed after she moved to the US.
Recently, a global debate has emerged about whether Americans are lazy. Some attribute this perception to technology and changing cultural norms, while others argue it stems from differing views on productivity. However, a woman named April—who goes by @4prillian on TikTok—stated that despite people's assumptions, "Americans are not lazy." The woman, originally from Hong Kong, initially believed that "Americans have their life on easy mode." However, her notion changed when she moved to the United States.
"I don't understand why Americans get the reputation of being lazy. We believe they have a very relaxed school curriculum. Going to school was just having fun," April said in her video. She further explained how she and many people around her grew up thinking that everything would be smooth sailing for Americans. The idea was that, after graduating, they would "miraculously get a job that pays a lot" just by showing up, without putting in much effort at work. "After work, they drive their big truck home, sit on the couch, eat fast food in front of the TV and then they go to bed at 9 pm," April added, sharing her preconceived notions.
All of April's assumptions about Americans changed once she started living in the country. She realized her earlier beliefs were "far from the truth." April shared how she found the college curriculum challenging and observed that everyone around her was consistently motivated and hardworking. "I have to work my b**t off to get good grades," she admitted. She also compared this to the parenting style in many Asian countries, where parents exert immense pressure on their children until they secure admission to a good college, only to step back once they’re enrolled.
When April entered the professional world in America, she discovered that many Americans begin their workdays early, often waking up as early as 5 a.m. Moreover, she revealed that Americans do not have easy access to cheap labor like Hong Kong. From doing household chores to watching their kids, they do everything on their own. "In the US, we have to do everything by ourselves unless we are extremely rich. On the weekends, we need to do house cleaning, house maintenance and DIY house projects because hiring contractors on everything is too expensive," April added. Her video received an overwhelmingly positive response on the platform, with many viewers, particularly Americans, relating to her perspective.
@lady.agnes commented, "They think we're lazy because stuff is convenient (like cars, fast food, etc.), but it's actually convenient and fast, so we have more time to work." Similarly, @_buttbutt wrote, "It's even worse than that. The college curriculum is hard and the primary curriculum doesn't prepare us for college." @lark22spur added, "That's so validating. I always feel like I'm on the go. Everyone I know works crazy hours for not great benefits (and I know a lot of professionals with degrees) like it's normal."
Meanwhile, @user857975650 shared, "My friend from Romania thought we were rich and entitled. He then came to Chicago for six months and said all we do is work and not enjoy life. He left." @sassycactus said, "Also, the work culture is very hard to exist in. It's very draining having to pretend to be happy and not tired."
