No matter how unkind or rude someone may be, there are always some redeeming qualities in every person. It only takes one positive person to recognize the promising side of another, momentarily overlooking their negative traits. The same happened when an artist reimagined Disney's Cinderella’s stepmother without the stereotypically 'evil' features. Through her crafty skills, the digital character designer, Lexis (@lexisvanhecke) on TikTok, attempted to rebrand the supervillain mother “Lady Tremaine,” bringing a unique and wholesome twist to the popular fairytale. A widely circulating video showed the professional illustrator using the re-aging tools, to make her appear more approachable.

The artistic recreation of Cinderella’s stepmother began with Lexis removing all her facial wrinkles. The concept artist, seemingly aiming to humanize the villain, started refining the most notable facial features of “Lady Tremaine.” This included enhancing her lips by adding more volume to their previously thin shape. She then adjusted the structure of her nose, making it more defined and softer around the edges. However, the most challenging part of the animated transformation was yet to come, as the elderly woman still retained her signature look through her piercing green, villainous eyes. “Evil stepmother before she became old and evil,” the text overlay on the one-minute transformative footage provided context. At this point, Lexis used the brush-stroke feature to edit the portrait’s most striking feature—Cinderella’s stepmother’s eyes.

The illustrator subtly changed their color to a lighter shade, giving them a more human-like appeal. She then removed the character’s perpetually tense eyebrows, replacing them with newly drawn ones that were softer around the edges. Next, she altered the character’s earrings, changing them from dark green studs to elegant golden jewels. “Lady Tremaine’s” typical appearance underwent a major transformation when Lexis replaced her outfit, changed her hairstyle, and applied makeup to her face. A modern white dress, subtle pink makeup and a ponytail made the character appear younger.

The digital artwork depicting Cinderella’s stepmother ended on a thought-provoking note, with the video creator attempting to reimagine her pre-villainous version. Through the caption, Lexis sought the online community’s opinion on what might have happened in the character's life. “Comment your best story, what happened to her that made her so evil?” the content creator asked.

Among a variety of reactions, @gamolienickle remarked, “It's actually part of the story—she was struggling financially and wanted the best for her biological daughters. She believed that marrying Cinderella's father would provide stability, but after his death, she was left with even more debt.” Adding to this, @loriensilvermoontenney explained, “Her first husband was the love of her life, and his sudden passing deeply affected her. Losing two husbands made her feel cursed and the whispers within her social circle only added to her despair. She was left feeling utterly hopeless.” “She was once young, beautiful and innocent like Cinderella, reminding her of her former self. However, she was devastated by a man who shattered her world. Determined to protect her children, she fought for their well-being and chose to remain single,” @kiwimahalo assumed. Others expressed their hope that a filmmaker would soon turn the subject into a full-fledged movie.
