He moved to the UK and discovered these common things in British households that left him scratching his head.
Americans are often left baffled over how different the Brits' culture is from theirs. From quirky humor to confusing lifestyle norms, it's a broad landscape of contrasting cultures that has the Americans who moved to the UK scratching their heads. It's not just about the accent or driving on the other side of the road, even British households have several unique features that the US natives might find weird. That was the case for popular American content creator Kjordy who lives in the UK and often shares his culture shock in his TikTok handle @kjordyyy.
Earlier this September, the American revealed the quirky household features in his British flat that just didn't make any sense to him. In the viral video, he first shows the laundry area in his home and one would normally expect to find a washer and a dryer next to each other. But Kjordy's home had only a washer and when he opened the door next to it, it turned out to be a freezer. "There's no tumble dryers here. You have to hang things up like it's the 18th century bro," the American exclaimed. Calling it a "struggle," he moved on to the next weird feature, which is the "insane" water pressure in the taps.
Even a slight turning of the tap caused the water to jet out of the pipe at high pressure. Also, the water temperature seemed a bit strange to Kjordy. "The cold water doesn't get that cold but the hot water gets like steaming/boiling," he explained and gave us a glimpse of the steam coming from the tap water. Next came the revelation of the unusual electrical setup. Yes! Unlike in the US, British homes have a switch next to the socket. Only when the switch is turned on and the red panel appears the electrical equipment plugged into the socket would work. "It stops you from using unwanted electricity," he added.
What baffled Kjordy next was how the lamps hung from the ceiling had no lampshade covering them. It was just a single bulb hanging from the end of a wire that ran through the ceiling. "All aesthetic, and boom! Single light bulb," the American quipped. Also, the fact that the toilet in British homes was completely separated from the bathroom was a big culture shock for him. Finally, when looking for ice for his drink, Kjordy couldn't find an ice machine in his refrigerator and this bothered him as an American. Having spent four years in the UK, these British household culture shocks still continue to leave him perplexed.
The video garnered nearly a million views in just over a month. Many British people had some interesting and sarcastic responses to Kjordy's take on their lifestyle. "From the UK, never heard of a tumbling dryer. We normally just wear our clothes wet. It's probably going to rain anyway so we don't bother," quipped @fluteddoomslug. "Then buy a dryer. Don't want boiling water? Adjust it and set a temperature. Want an American fridge with an ice maker? Then buy one. You’re what we would consider poor in the UK," gagged @guyincognito54635. "Wild to me that American plug sockets are always on live," chimed in @richfish2112.
@kjordyyy People always ask what was the biggest cultural shock, THIS HAS to be it 🥹
